During the sunny weekend, TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) lifted two large concrete girders into position from the closed A10 West carriageway (towards Leeuwarden/Zaanstad). The girders are now securely in place on the abutments – the supports at either end of the viaduct. The widening is needed to accommodate the new layout of the A10 Zuid and A10 West. Traffic heading towards Amsterdam will have its own carriageway, and the S107 Henk Sneevlietweg exit will be moved closer to Anthony Fokkerweg.
Foundations
A considerable amount of preparatory work was needed before the girders could be installed. We relocated and removed cables and pipes, installed sheet piling and bored piles, and created an excavation pit for the new foundations. We also removed the outer edge of the existing viaduct and drilled holes into its side to install reinforcing bars. Installing the new girders marks an important step in widening the viaduct.
Disruption was limited
Traffic disruption over the weekend was much less than expected. Despite the closure of Overtoomsesluis, traffic continued to flow smoothly. As the works progressed well, the A10 West was able to reopen at 22.00 on Saturday evening, considerably earlier than the planned reopening on Sunday morning.
Widening the A10 Zuid
We are widening the A10 Zuid between the De Nieuwe Meer and Amstel junctions. Two lanes will be added to the existing four lanes in each direction, bringing the total to six lanes in each direction. This will allow us to separate through traffic from local traffic. Four lanes will be available for through traffic, while two lanes will serve local traffic using the S108 and S109 access and exit roads.
