Fortunately, the fire caused only material damage. The TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) used the facility to store and test traffic management and bridge control systems. All the materials stored there were lost. The investigation into the cause of the fire is well under way. We are also assessing the impact on the schedule for the Schinkelbrug reconstruction project.
Work continues
Thanks in part to the help of suppliers, work was able to proceed as planned over the weekend of 2-4 October and during the overnight works on 6 and 8 October. We are therefore sticking to the original project schedule.
Material damage
The materials lost in the fire included traffic management and bridge control systems, such as monitoring and detection systems used to manage traffic. These include cameras, electronic information signs and control cabinets housing electrical components. The testing programme for the first two new Schinkelbrug bridges had already been completed in full, and the lessons learned had been saved digitally. Replacement materials have now been ordered and production is under way. It looks as though they can be manufactured and delivered on time. We are monitoring deliveries closely and will keep you informed if any unexpected delays affect our schedule.
Schinkelbrug
As part of the widening of the A10 Zuid, we are building an additional bridge on both the north and south sides of the existing Schinkelbrug. The Schinkelbrug will eventually consist of eight bridges: five for road traffic, two for trains and one for the metro. The Schinkelbrug is currently operated from a temporary control cabin next to the Nieuwe Meersluis building. At the end of 2027, bridge operations will move to the Nieuwe Meersluis building, where operators will start using the new control system.
