Where in Zuidas
These are the types of piles that will be driven into the ground on the night of 23-24 March. The steel construction from which the overhead lines are suspended is called a portal.
The piles need to be placed in preparation for the working weekend during the Whitsun holiday, from 30 May to 1 June 2020. That is when the ZuidPlus construction consortium will continue its work on the Brittenpassage, an extra pedestrian tunnel for Amsterdam Zuid station. The Brittenpassage is part of the Zuidasdok project.
Demolition of tram tunnel
Over the Whitsun holiday weekend, ZuidPlus will be demolishing the last remnants of the disused tram tunnel, which line 51 previously ran through. ‘On the roof of the old tram tunnel, there is a portal that carries the overhead power supply for the trams,’ explains Sjaak Gerritsen, the project leader. ‘That portal needs to be moved temporarily, which is why the foundation piles are needed. They will be driven into the ground on the night of 23-24 March.’
Tight schedule
‘We are installing the piles now because there is very little space to work and because we have so many tasks scheduled during the Whitsun weekend, all of which need to be finished within a relatively short timeframe. By getting this done now, we are giving ourselves a little more leeway in that tight schedule.’
Noise
The piles will be installed on the night of 23-24 March, and this will cause some noise and vibrations. They will be driven in two 15-minute periods. The work will be carried out next to platform 2, approximately 2.5 metres away from the railway track.
