Permit granted for Virtual Fountains artwork

On 26 February 2021, we announced that the design for the square in Europaplein-Oost is now definitive. We also mentioned that an application had been submitted for an environmental permit for the Virtual Fountains artwork that will feature on the square. The permit was granted on 5 March 2021.

The artwork by artist Femke Schaap comprises three groups of sculptures made from cast terrazzo stone with Norwegian marble. Between sunset and sunrise, a projection of running water will be displayed on the stone artworks, as a nod to the names of the three sculptures: The Source, The Waterfall, and The Fountain. As such, the work of art will form a virtual fountain, with the water referring to the street names in the Rivierenbuurt.

If you disagree with the granting of this environmental permit, you have until 16 April 2021 to submit a notice of objection. You can find more information and relevant documentation (in Dutch) on the website of Environmental Services for the Noordzeekanaal area. According to the schedule, work will begin on the new square in September 2021 and it will be completed in the spring of 2022.
