Work starts on multifunctional building The Pulse

Right alongside Hourglass, the sheet piling is already in place in preparation for excavating the construction pit. By late 2024, there will be a building here that sets the tone for the new neighbourhood being developed in this part of Zuidas. In alliance with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and VU University Medical Center, De Key housing corporation and other developers and corporations, this part of Zuidas is set to be transformed into a vibrant neighbourhood in the next 15 years, featuring around 2,700 homes, university facilities and knowledge-related businesses, a primary school, social amenities, shops, culture, bars and restaurants and OBA NEXT. It will be an innovation district that brings together health, science and entrepreneurship.

Sustainability and quality of life

The Pulse is all about sustainability and quality of life. Its developer VORM, together with the recent addition EDGE, are both committed to adding new vibrancy and warmth to Zuidas. To help achieve that, The Pulse will include plenty of public areas, with various hospitality outlets, a supermarket and a nine-screen cinema. Some 36,000 sq. m. have been set aside for office accommodation. There will be an underground car park with shared electric cars. Of course, there will also be housing: 151 mid-market rental apartments and 49 private sector rental properties. ‘It is hoped that all the new hospitality, the cultural amenities and future residents will also attract people who don’t live in Zuidas and that The Pulse, within walking distance of Amsterdam Zuid station, will become an attractive and bustling place for everyone,’ says Marc Vriens, development manager at VORM.

Urban forest

The Pulse will be sustainable and very energy efficient. On the eighth and ninth floors, at a height of 35 m, there will be an urban forest. This will help with cooling, store rainwater and boost biodiversity in Zuidas. The inner courtyard that the City of Amsterdam is creating on the southern side of The Pulse will also contribute to this.

VORM Bouw is responsible for the realisation of The Pulse. It is scheduled for completion at the end of 2024.
