Temporary construction route between Prinses Irenestraat and Parnassusweg

Prinses Irenestraat is undergoing a major transformation. A key part of this includes the renovation of the building formerly occupied by the Amsterdam International Community School (AICS), at Prinses Irenestraat 59. This transformation was announced previously. Once the environmental permit has been granted, the contractor will strip the building, replacing it with a contemporary office building with the name PI59. The demolition and construction work will cause disruption. In order to reduce this is far as possible and guarantee safety in the neighbourhood, we are installing a temporary connection for construction traffic between Prinses Irenestraat and Parnassusweg.

Construction site

This will enable construction traffic that arrives, including trucks, to turn right from Parnassusweg into Prinses Irenestraat (see the map below). Currently, the only connection between the two streets is for bicycles and pedestrians. Thanks to the new route, construction traffic will be able to access the project P159 construction site directly and also turn round again in the direction of Parnassusweg. The temporary connection will prevent construction traffic travelling to and from the construction site via Parnassusweg. In order to enable construction of the site access road, we will need to take several measures, including breaking open a concrete wall and raising the height of the cycle path at that point.

From 19 to 27 February

We are building the temporary road during the February half-term holiday, between Saturday, 19 and Sunday, 27 February 2022, because this is a quieter period for traffic. For this ten-day period, no bicycles or pedestrians will be able to travel between the two streets. They can take an alternative route via Strawinskypad. On weekdays, local residents may experience noise nuisance from 07.00 and at weekends starting from 09.00. Although contractors may begin preparing their work from 07.00 at weekends, this should not cause any noise nuisance.

Barriers and traffic controller

After 27 February, cyclists and pedestrians will again be able to cross between Parnassusweg and Prinses Irenestraat. There will be two barriers in place to prevent cyclists and pedestrians crossing when a truck is entering or leaving the construction site. A traffic controller will be on hand to keep traffic running smoothly. The temporary construction road is explicitly intended to be accessible for construction traffic only and will be closed to all traffic at night. This means that normal traffic will not be able to use this connection.

Relandscaping of Prinses Irenestraat

When the transformation of Prinses Irenestraat 59 has been completed, we will start relandscaping Prinses Irenestraat. The water-retardant green infiltration strip next to De Goede Doelen Loterij will be extended as far as Parnassusweg. We will also be using the temporary construction road for this work. When the relandscaping work on the street is finished, we will return the connection between Parnassusweg and Prinses Irenestraat to its original state. This is expected to happen in 2024.
