Neighbours of PI59, the new Philips headquarters on the corner of Parnassusweg-Prinses Irenestraat, had an opportunity to put forward ideas for the park in early 2023. This park will be on the roof of the PI59 car park and will continue into the street next to the car park, between Prinses Irenestraat and Strawinskypad. In order to enable interested parties to put forward ideas, we used an online tool known as ‘Swipocratie’. The results showed high scores for greenery, sport and play. In the summer of 2023, we held an information meeting to discuss the initial ideas for the park with interested parties.
Next stage in design process
Armed with the ideas from local residents, the designers from the City of Amsterdam (for the street) and from the owner Cityhold (for the parking deck) set to work to come up with a cohesive design for both parts of the park that takes account of the preferences of local residents. This design process has taken longer than anticipated. As plans currently stand, we expect to be able to discuss the design with local residents and interested parties before the summer holiday.
Planting started
Despite the fact that the overall park design is not yet completely ready, work has already started on the addition of plants and shrubs on the edge of the parking deck. This is because the original design included a basketball court on the car park roof. Local residents had specific objections to the basketball court because of the fear of the noise that it might cause. In response to this objection, the basketball court was removed from the design and a permit was granted for the green edging of the rooftop park only. This kind of green border was already part of the plan and is therefore being added now, in anticipation of the final rooftop park design. Work is currently underway on a design for the innermost part of the rooftop park, based on the results of the public participation. Further information will follow very soon.
