The working area for the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction stretches from the junction itself, via the Schinkelbrug bridge, to the S108/Amstelveenseweg exit. The TriAX Construction Consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer, Heijmans) will therefore be working in several different places simultaneously in the years ahead: next to the A10 Zuid, at the Schinkelbrug and at the De Nieuwe Meer junction itself. The aim? The construction of a parallel structure for local traffic, as shown in the animation below. This article provides an overview of what you can expect from us in 2024 and 2025.

A10 Zuid
The extra lanes for local traffic will be built where the embankment is now located alongside the A10 Zuid. This will be dug up and we will then be able to lay the foundations for the new parallel structure, known as a piled embankment.
Soil-nailing
The work will start in September 2024 with a process known as soil-nailing, enabling us to clear the adjacent embankment for the widening of the A10 Zuid. The first place we are doing this is at Joy Jaagpad tennis park. In early October, we will begin the soil-nailing process on both sides of the orbital ring road on the section between the river Schinkel and Piet Kranenbergpad. At the end of the year, we will do the final section, between Piet Kranenbergpad and Amstelveenseweg. The soil-nailing process is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2025.
Inserting sheet piling
This soil-nailing process is not possible up to 25 m from the existing viaducts. We will insert sheet piling in these areas. This sheet piling will be installed in the weekends of 20 to 23 September (south side of A10 Zuid) and from 4 to 7 October 2024 (north side of A10 Zuid). For this purpose, we will temporarily close the A10 Zuid.
Creating the piled embankment
In the same order as the soil-nailing process, we will also start inserting foundation piles for the piled embankment. This work will start in January 2025 and take until the end of that year. From the summer of 2025, we will begin creating the piled embankments and building up the reinforced soil.
Schinkelbrug
In September, we will start work demolishing the operating towers for the Schinkel bridges. We have already installed a crane deck on the south side of the Schinkel bridges. A crane can be positioned on this to hoist materials from the water onto the land and vice-versa. During this period, we will also raise the riverbed, which has been washed out by shipping over the years.
Foundations & substructure for new Schinkel bridges
Construction work on the new northern and southern Schinkel bridges will start with the creation of a construction pit for the foundations for the bascule cellars for the new bridges. The pile-driving will begin at the end of 2024. At this point, we will immediately relocate the waiting areas for shipping slightly to the south to create space for the new southern bridge. From 2025, we will be working on the concrete substructure of the new northern and southern bridge (also on the water itself). This substructure consists of piles, the concrete floors and the walls that support the beams. When the substructure has been completed, we will be able to lift in the beams for the concrete bridge sections from the end of 2025. The beams will form the span of the bridge.
Changes to the Nieuwe Meersluis
Part of the new bridge on the north side of the Schinkelbrug will be above the Nieuwe Meersluis lock. To make it possible to lift out the southern lock gate for maintenance, we are making changes to the structure of the lock. We will do this work in November/December 2024. During the works, the lock will be blocked intermittently.
De Nieuwe Meer junction
In the period ahead, we are laying an exit for construction traffic on the bend that connects the A4 with the A10 West. By using this new construction route, we will be able to halve the number of transport movements across Jaagpad from and to the construction sites.
Metro viaduct and southern Schinkel bridge
At the end of this year, we will be making adaptations to two metro viaduct supports at the junction in order to create space to widen the road. On the south side, we will use the soil left over from digging the embankment as substrate for the new southern bridge across the Schinkel.
New flyover
In November 2024, we will be installing sheet piling at the junction to create space to widen the orbital ring road and build the new flyover that will connect the A10 Zuid to the A4 in the direction of Schiphol. In early 2025, we will start working on the foundation piles and concrete work that will be underneath the flyover. We are building the supports for the flyover between the existing connections. This is a difficult area in which to work, since space is limited. For this reason, construction work on the support will take place during a 16-day closure of the A10 Zuid in the summer of 2025 (further details to follow).

Get in touch with usThe pedestrian/cycle path under the Schinkelbrug is really a critical connection. There are very few connecting paths to access the walking/cycle paths along the Nieuwe Meer. I can also see the temptation from the construction teams to want to close that path for their convenience since so much construction is happening around that connection. Hopefully the public mandate is to keep that path open? What are the plans?
