For a period of just over two years starting on 17 February 2025, cyclists and pedestrians will only be able to use the northern lock gate in order to cross the Nieuwe Meersluis. As a result, it will not be possible to switch to the other lock gate when vessels are passing through. You will need to wait for several minutes. In order to let cyclists heading in the direction of the Nieuwe Meersluis know whether the lock is open or closed for cyclists, we will position signs at two locations.
Free passage during rush hour
During the morning rush hour between 07.00 and 09.00, the lock will not operate (see explanation below) and pedestrians and cyclists will be able to walk and cycle across the northern lock gate unimpeded. However, the lock will operate during the afternoon and evening rush hour, but will be subject to continuous monitoring. This will enable us to identify the most effective way of coordinating bicycle, pedestrian and shipping traffic in order to minimise disruption.
Lock operation
This is the process in which a lock is used to enable a boat to move between two waterways that have different water levels, in this case, the lake (De Nieuwe Meer) and the river (Schinkel). This process works in both directions, from low to high and from high to low.
New Schinkel bridge for local traffic
At the end of 2024, we already completed some work on the southern lock gate, in order to future-proof the lock gate and demolish the bridge control tower. We are now closing the footpath and cycle path at the southern lock gate in order to be able to build safely. Next to the southern lock gate, we will set up a construction site where we will do most of the building work for the new northern Schinkel bridge. This is part of the process of regenerating the A10 Zuid. From 2028, traffic coming from Amsterdam Zuid (via the S108 and S109 access roads) will use this bridge to reach the A10 West or the A4 in the direction of Schiphol/Rotterdam.
