Zuidasdok is currently working – and will continue to do so over the coming years – on the widening of the A10 Zuid. During the weekend beginning Friday, 21 August, we will be working near Ons Buiten garden park to replace the viaduct carrying traffic from the A4 to the A10 Zuid.
Wider viaduct needed
Traffic travelling from the A4 towards the A10 West currently passes underneath the viaduct. Traffic crossing the viaduct towards the A10 Zuid has two lanes plus a peak-hour lane. As part of the widening of the A10 Zuid, two additional lanes will be added on both sides of the motorway for local traffic heading to Amsterdam Zuid and Buitenveldert. This means that, in the future, you will need to choose the correct lanes before reaching the viaduct. Travelling onwards towards the A1 or A2? Stay on the through lanes. Heading into the city via exit S108 or S109? Use one of the two additional lanes for local traffic.
Lifting girders into place, followed by sheet piling
On Sunday, 23 August, we will lift eight girders into place for the new, wider viaduct. As a result, from Friday 21, August at 22.00 until Monday morning at 05.00, the roads connecting the A4 and A10 Zuid to the A10 West towards Leeuwarden/Zaanstad will be closed. We will provide further information about these closures in a separate article. More information is already available here.
From week 36 (Monday, 31 August) to week 38 (Monday, 14 September), we will install 151 sheet piles along a section approximately 210 metres long, slightly further along towards the Schinkelbrug. They are needed to construct the two additional lanes for local traffic (the bypass described in the last paragraph). No road closure is required for this work, because the equipment needed to install the sheet piles will be positioned on the bypass.
Replacement rather than widening
The new traffic layout for vehicles travelling from the A4 towards the A10 Zuid requires a viaduct with four lanes plus a hard shoulder. The existing viaduct cannot be widened, so it will need to be demolished and replaced. However, the connection to the A10 Zuid needs to remain open during the construction works. That is why we are already building the new, wider viaduct, so that traffic can be diverted across it while the existing viaduct is being demolished.
Bypass for reconstruction of the Schinkelbrug
The new viaduct will come into use in mid-2027, after which we can demolish the old viaduct. From that point onwards, traffic leaving the viaduct will use the new lanes for local traffic. From 2027 until 2031, we will use this new section of motorway as a diversion route towards the new southern Schinkelbrug bridge while it is under construction. This will enable us to demolish the adjacent road bridge and then build two new bridges on the remaining foundations.
