Following a major move and a complete makeover, our public information officers Karima, Jelte and Gijs are ready to welcome visitors again starting today at the new Zuidas-Zuidasdok Information Centre. Beside the enormous scale model, they can tell you all about what is happening in Zuidas and what the area will look like over the coming years. And, of course, about Zuidasdok, the major infrastructure project that will redevelop Amsterdam Zuid station, widen the A10 Zuid and move part of the motorway underground into the A10 tunnel.
Event manager and relocation project manager Martina: ‘We did not simply move all the furniture – the new information centre has been completely redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up.’
Completely new design
Architecture practice Dérive (Rotterdam, Brussels) created the distinctive design. Public information officer Karima: ‘The first thing you notice is the centre’s distinctive look and feel. Much of the interior is made from construction materials such as props, base plates and scaffolding tubes. It really brings the construction site indoors.’ And there is more, Karima adds: ‘We now also have a reading bench for anyone who wants to sit down and look through the information at their leisure. And younger visitors have their own construction corner, where they can build their own city with LEGO.’
Design and construction go hand in hand
Architecture practice Dérive and contractor Studio Tepe based the design and construction on the ‘aesthetics of the construction site’, which is by definition ‘temporary, flexible and demountable’. This is reflected in the use of sustainable (reusable) construction materials such as scaffolding and base plates. Construction photography also has a prominent place in the centre, allowing visitors to see and experience the ‘in-between phase’ that is so characteristic of Zuidas: a reference to the temporary nature of the construction works taking place throughout the area.
Scale models and (virtual) walks
Scale models of Zuidas and Amsterdam Zuid station, a virtual walk through the future Amsterdam Zuid station, various videos about Zuidas and Zuidasdok and, of course, our highly knowledgeable public information officers: everything you know from the old information centre in the WTC atrium is back. You can also join a free guided tour of Zuidas or the Zuidasdok infrastructure project every Wednesday afternoon and on the last Saturday of every month.
Practical information
The information centre is open Monday to Thursday, from 10.00 to 16.00. From September onwards, you can also visit on the last Saturday of every month. You can reach us via our own entrance on Matthijs Vermeulenpad, within walking distance of the station entrance at Zuidplein and next to Grand Café Ox & Bucks. You can also enter from inside the WTC via the main entrance on Zuidplein. Large groups are very welcome too, but please register in advance using our contact form.
