About Zuidasdok

Zuidasdok is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Netherlands. It is set to improve accessibility in Amsterdam and the northern part of the Randstad, by public transport and by road. Zuidasdok is a collaboration between the Public Works Department (Rijkswaterstaat), ProRail and the City of Amsterdam.

In the central zone of Zuidas, part of the A10 Zuid will be diverted underground. Building two new tunnels will create space above ground in order to extend Amsterdam Zuid station, creating a state-of-the-art transport hub. Diverting the motorway underground will also improve the quality of the public space in Zuidas. The A10 Zuid will be widened between the Amstel and De Nieuwe Meer junctions. This road widening will ultimately improve both safety and traffic flow. This will be achieved by separating local traffic (two lanes in both directions) from through-traffic (four lanes in both directions).

Amsterdam Zuid station

Amsterdam Zuid station is growing fast. This growth is expected to continue at an even faster pace, reaching approximately 300,000 public transport passengers per day by 2030. In order to accommodate the flow of passengers, the station is being expanded. There are also plans for a third railway platform, which is necessary in order to relocate international railway transport from Amsterdam Central Station to Amsterdam Zuid. The ultimate aim is for international trains to provide a clean alternative to air traffic within Europe. The Amsterdam Zuid public transport hub will have a new railway and metro station above ground, with a bus station on one side and a tram station on the other side. The area around the station will also be given green landscaping. The existing station entrance, the Minervapassage, is being widened from around 12 m to 40 m, and there will be a new, second entrance, the Brittenpassage. Between these passageways, there will be a shopping area and extra bicycle parking facilities.

A10 Zuid

The A10 Zuid is part of the Amsterdam orbital ring road and is located between the De Nieuwe Meer (A4/A10) junction in the west and the Amstel (A2/A10) junction in the east, with the S108 and S109 serving as access roads and exits. The road is an important arterial link connecting the northern Randstad, Amsterdam and Zuidas to each other. Approximately 150,000 vehicles use the A10 Zuid on an average working day. This includes around 9,000 vehicles at rush-hour. Roughly half is made up of through-traffic and the other half is local traffic. It is anticipated that traffic intensity will increase in the years ahead. This is due in part to the housebuilding plans in the region and the further development of Zuidas. At the De Nieuwe Meer junction in particular, where traffic from the A4 and the A10 West merges, the situation is also unsafe. Separating the traffic should ultimately help improve traffic flow and boost safety. Local traffic will be separated from through-traffic at an early stage. There will be two additional lanes in each direction for local traffic. For through-traffic, four lanes will be available in each direction. In order to achieve these improvements, the De Nieuwe Meer junction and Amstel junction need to be completely upgraded.

Tunnel

Amsterdam Zuid station is nestled between the two carriageways of the A10 Zuid. Right next to the A10 Zuid is the Zuidas development. In order to make it possible to develop the Amsterdam Zuid public transport hub and widen and separate traffic on the A10 Zuid, the motorway will need to be diverted underground in the central zone. The addition of this tunnel will also improve the quality of Zuidas as an urban area.  Above the tunnel, there will be trams on the southern side of the station and the bus station will be on the northern side. There will also be space for more green areas to the north of the station.
