From Monday, 18 May, we will work for twelve weeks on De Boelelaan West, the section between Parnassusweg/Buitenveldertselaan and Van der Boechorststraat. Adjustments will be made to the tram tracks alongside the VU University as well as to the pedestrian and bicycle crossing at the junction of De Boelelaan and Parnassusweg/Buitenveldertselaan. Please be prepared for varying levels of disruption between 18 May and 9 August 2026.
18 May – 9 August: disruption on De Boelelaan West
We are taking (public) holidays into account to minimise inconvenience for the surrounding area as much as possible. Wherever possible, work will take place outside peak hours (in Zuidas between 08.00–09.30 and 16.30–18.00) or during the night. The works will be carried out in several phases between Monday, 18 May and Sunday, 9 August 2026, each with different levels of disruption.
- 18 May – 7 June (phase 1a, three weeks)
Minimal disruption for cyclists and pedestrians. Motorised traffic, buses and emergency services will have one of the two lanes closed in both directions. Tram services will continue to operate at all times.
- 8 June – 3 July (phase 1b, four weeks)
The crossing near the De Boelelaan/VU tram stop will be closed. Pedestrians can cross De Boelelaan at the Parnassusweg junction and at Van der Boechorststraat. Cyclists can also cross there, but must first take a diversion route via Gustav Mahlerlaan.
- 4 July – 19 July (phase 2, two weeks)
The western side of the pedestrian and bicycle crossing at the junction of De Boelelaan/Parnassusweg will be partially closed. Pedestrians can cross via the eastern side of the junction or via the zebra crossing near the De Boelelaan/VU tram stop. Cyclists will be diverted via Gustav Mahlerlaan in the north and A.J. Ernststraat in the south.
Motorised traffic, buses and emergency services will again have one of the two lanes closed in both directions. Tram line 24 will not run via De Boelelaan during this period. Bus stops in both directions will be relocated to temporary locations.
- 20 July – 9 August (phase 3, three weeks)
Please note: De Boelelaan West will be fully closed to cars, scooters and motorcycles. Traffic will be diverted locally using roadside signage. At the junction of De Boelelaan and Parnassusweg, the pedestrian crossing on the western side of the junction (the VU side) will be closed. For cyclists, all sides of the junction will be closed except for the eastern side near the De Boelegracht.
Tram track modifications
Increasing congestion on De Boelelaan regularly causes delays. We will therefore reinforce the entire tram track, allowing buses to use the tram lane in the future. This is one of the measures included in the Sustainably Accessible Zuidflank Mobility Plan (Mobiliteitsplan Zuidflank Duurzaam Bereikbaar), aimed at keeping the southern part of Amsterdam accessible in the future.
Safer crossing
Cycling paths are also becoming increasingly busy, with growing speed differences between users – from beginner cyclists to cargo bikes and e-bikes. For this reason, we are widening the pedestrian and bicycle crossing on the western side of the junction between De Boelelaan and Parnassusweg/Buitenveldertselaan. This will create more space, improve traffic flow and increase safety.
Reconfiguration of De Boelelaan Midden
At the same time, works are also taking place slightly further along as part of the reconfiguration of De Boelelaan Midden. Here, we will renew the carriageway and redesign it according to the safety standards for a 30 km/h road. In addition, the service road on the south side and the green areas on the north side of the road will be redesigned. Work on this project will start in the second half of 2026.
