With temperatures approaching 30 degrees Celsius, it was very much a short-sleeves weekend for the teams from construction consortium TriAX (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans). The results were impressive: following the installation of the girders, more than half of the flyover is now clearly visible. Traffic travelling from the De Nieuwe Meer junction towards the A10 West already passes underneath the structure. The flyover is expected to be completed in early 2027, after which it will direct local traffic from the A10 Zuid towards the A4 from the end of 2027 onwards. The weekend works were completed well ahead of schedule, and the road reopened on Sunday evening at 19.00.

The flyover now curves clearly above the roadway

Precisely timed transport

To ensure safe working conditions, we closed the connection between the A10 Zuid and the A10 West on Friday evening. This allowed the heavy lifting crane to be assembled early on Saturday morning. Later that morning, a precisely timed transport arrived carrying twelve concrete girders from Haitsma Beton in Friesland. The girders are delivered right before installation because there is insufficient space around the De Nieuwe Meer junction to store them.

Pouring the concrete deck layer

In addition to installing the girders between pillars 5 and 3 (see image at the end of this article), we also continued work on the girders that had already been installed earlier. During the weekend, we poured the so-called concrete deck layer. This concrete layer binds the girders together into a single structure and will later support the asphalt surface. Small amounts of wet concrete could potentially drip onto the road below, which is why this work was specifically scheduled during the motorway closure beneath the flyover. Finally, support structures were installed on both sides of the flyover. These will later carry the overhead gantries for road signage and traffic management displays.

Traffic disruption

On Saturday, congestion on local roads around the Johan Huizingalaan and Henk Sneevlietweg in Amsterdam Nieuw-West increased to just over 10 minutes of additional travel time. The following day, this was reduced to around 5 minutes through targeted deployment of traffic controllers and adjustments to traffic lights. On the main motorway network, including the A10 Oost and Noord, additional travel time remained limited to around 10 minutes throughout the weekend. The exception was the diversion route via the A5, where delays on Saturday increased to approximately 40 minutes due to an accident.

Flyover completed in early 2027

Following the works last weekend, all girders between the western abutment and pillar 3 are now in place. There are twelve girders between each pair of pillars, bringing the total to 96 girders. The concrete deck layer is then poured over the girders, and this process has now progressed as far as pillar 5. During the weekend of 26–29 June, we will install the girders between pillars 3 and 2, after which the deck layer will also be poured there. For the final twelve girders, we must wait until the ground at the western abutment has reached sufficient strength through preloading. We expect this to be the case by the end of 2026. Once those girders are installed, the final deck layer and asphalt will be poured, allowing the flyover to be completed in early 2027.

Precision work
Martijn van den Ham, work planner for construction consortium TriAX, enjoys seeing the flyover gradually take shape month by month: ‘It really is precision work. The flyover first curves slightly to the right and then back to the left, which means the concrete structure and the girders beneath it vary continuously in height. As a result, around 100 of the 120 girders are unique in size.’ The construction remains on schedule, although there are occasional setbacks. Van den Ham explains: ‘Recently, two columns were covered in graffiti. That is disappointing, because ideally I would like to deliver the flyover in flawless grey condition.’
