Renovation work starts on Europaplein-Oost

The new layout of Europaplein-Oost (along Europaboulevard and between Rooseveltlaan and President Kennedylaan) will provide space for more greenery, a new play area, seating and an artwork. The number of parking spaces will be reduced in order to create space for more green areas. There will also be a water storage system, preventing rainwater from discharging directly into the sewer in the event of heavy showers. The green strips above the ground (water-retardant green infiltration strips) will also serve the same function.

Schedule

On 8 November 2021, we will start to remove the paving on the north-east side of the square. This is where Waternet will install a new sewer. By combining this work with the renovation of the square, disruption will be limited. In December, the installation of the sewer on the north side of the square will follow. We will then work on new entrances and exits to the square. Landscaping work will begin in January. For that purpose, we will remove parking spaces and add green areas, the play facilities, seating and the ‘Virtual Fountains’ artwork. We will create new parking spaces for the housing. According to the schedule, the square should be ready for use by the summer of 2022.

Design

Over the last two years, local residents have had an opportunity to contribute ideas on the relandscaping work and various information meetings have been held. The provisional design was presented in December 2020 with a video. In February 2021, we presented the definitive design. The outdoor work is now set to start.

How will it affect you?

The work on Europaplein-Oost is expected to last around seven months. Some disruption for local residents will be unavoidable, but we will do everything we can to keep it to a minimum. The transport of materials to and from the work site will not be permitted during rush-hour: between 08.00 – 09.30 and 16.30 – 18.00. The housing around the square will always remain accessible. Whenever access is restricted to parts of the square, we will announce it in advance by means of sign-posting and ensure that there are safe and clear diversions.
