ADORE building to be fitted with thermal energy storage

Thermal energy storage (or TES) is already being used at about 30 locations across Zuidas. For example, Amsterdam UMC will soon be using two TES systems and these will also heat and cool the future ADORE Research & Diagnostic Centre. The Pulse of Amsterdam construction project also includes TES, as does the newly renovated Strawinsky House.

From deep under the ground

Our buildings need to be cooled in the summer and warmed in the winter. That requires energy. Usually, this energy comes from electricity or a gas boiler, but not with thermal energy storage. TES uses the coolness stored underground in the summer, and the warmth stored underground in the winter. In April 2022, Infinity (‘De Schoen’) was fitted with a new TES system. John van de Klaauw, project leader for Measuring & Control Technology TES at De Ruiter Grondwatertechniek BV explains how it works.

Energy-neutral buildings

TES is not the only way in which water can be used for cooling or heating. In the future residential district of Ravel, for instance, we will use surplus heat from the Vattenfall power station in Diemen. Another method would be to cool buildings with water from De Nieuwe Meer at 16.5 degrees, using a different network of pipes. Energy-neutrality is an important principle for new development in Zuidas. We are helping to achieve Amsterdam’s ambition (from 2015) for energy-neutral buildings in many different ways. Encouraging the use of TES in Zuidas is taking us one step closer to achieving that ambition.
