Deputy Mayor Rutger Groot Wassink and city district board member Flora Breemer have written a letter about this to the residents and businesses in the Kapel & Convict neighbourhood. In May, we will be starting the necessary repair and refurbishment work on this monumental building. The work will begin with the façade and roof and scaffolding will be installed for this purpose. At set times outside the school rush-hour, the cycle path in Prinses Irenestraat (from Beethovenstraat) will be used for essential local traffic. The more extensive interior refurbishment work will probably happen during the summer. We are currently working on the details of that. The most likely option will be to add a service road running via the undeveloped plots so that construction traffic can avoid the cycle path. We will update you as soon as more is known.
Market consultation
Currently, the vacant Kapel building is under the management of Zwerfkei. The Conservatorium van Amsterdam was previously planning to convert Kapel & Convict into an annex, but rising costs put an end to the project. Because of that, at the end of 2022, we carried out a market consultation to gauge interest from market players in the development of a new cultural and/or social use for the Kapel & Convict buildings. A lot of interest was shown and the ultimate intention is still to redevelop the building. We will of course update you on this at a later stage.
Ukrainian refugees in Amsterdam
A total of 100 places for refugees are being created in Kapel together with communal areas in Kapel & Convict. Salvation Army staff will be on hand on a daily basis in order to provide the refugees with professional supervision and support. Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the City of Amsterdam has provided shelter for around 2,800 refugees from Ukraine. A further 3,500 or so are living with host families. In Zuidas, the Holiday Inn at De Boelelaan 2 has also been in use as accommodation for refugees since March 2022.
