Railway and metro passengers will gradually begin to experience increased disruption as a result of the renovation of the Minervapassage, the existing entrance to Amsterdam Zuid station. We are widening the passageway (currently 12 m, soon to be 40 m) and increasing its height (now 2.5 m underneath the metro tracks, soon to be more than 4 m). In order to make this possible, we need to build a new roof for the Minervapassage. This work is being done in sections. The first roof section was moved in June 2023 across the passageway from our work site. It is currently underneath the metro tracks on which line 52 will run. We are now working on the second roof section. This will be shifted into position in August 2024, underneath the most northerly metro track (serving lines 50 and 51 in the direction of Isolatorweg). The Nieuw-Zuid construction consortium (Mobilis, Boskalis and van Gelder) is currently building the second roof section at the construction location between the metro tracks.

Working in the Minervapassage

The roof section is around 100 m in length. Metro trains will soon be running across it, which means it will need to support significant weight. For this reason, the roof section requires two additional supports. These will be located just where the passengers are in Minervapassage. We also did this in 2023, for the first roof section. Starting on 13 May, we will create a small work site in the Minervapassage. This will be behind the new GVB Service & Tickets desk and will run to the entrance going up to the metro tracks. One row of access gates will need to be removed to create the site. During off-peak hours, we will also be narrowing this part of the passageway to 6 m.

There will be a work site at this location in the Minervapassage

Open floor

As soon as the work site has been fenced off, we will dig up the floor. Behind the hoardings, we need to do various works in order to be able to build the additional supports for the roof section at this location. There are lots of cables and pipelines here that we need to move. We will also be reinforcing a sheet pile wall that has been holding back the soil from the A10 Zuid for years. Since we are now starting to dig, this sheet piling needs to be anchored diagonally, using tiebacks. There is also a technical space located roughly behind the GVB Service & Tickets area that we need to protect. This is because the roof of this technical space needs to remain intact when we demolish the existing roof this summer. We are building a temporary support structure for this purpose.

Moving second roof section into position

These works will last until early July. That will take us to the start of a seven-week period involving a lot of work, which includes moving the second roof section for the renovation of the Minervapassage into position. We will provide more details in due course.
