This summer, we are increasing the height of the track and platform used by metro 50 and 51 in the direction of Isolatorweg. This has made it possible to move a new roof into position above the Brittenpassage: the new passenger tunnel at the station. On 5 August, it was the turn of the roof of the existing station passageway, and metro passengers are now reaping the rewards: from Monday, 26 August, three of the four metro platforms will be at the same height. This provides additional space, making transfers significantly easier. In 2025, we will raise the height of the final metro track and platform, after which, all of the metro platforms will be at the same height. This will remain the case until 2027 at the latest, when the Brittenpassage is taken into commission.
Easier transfers
The platform used by metros 50 and 51 is currently separated from line 52 (North/South metro line) by a difference in height and a glass and steel balustrade. Both the height difference and the balustrade will disappear, along with the familiar glass dome above the escalator/stairway and lift – to be replaced by a less conspicuous but functional roof instead. After that, we will combine the two platforms to create a spacious island platform on the same level, with a metro track on both sides. It will also be full of information and security systems. Of course, there will be space for the shelters (covered waiting rooms), and for the waste bins. At the same time, we will adapt the signposting in line with the new situation.
Reuse of materials
In order to regenerate the station, we first need to do a lot of demolition work. Where possible, we will be reusing the materials. The glass balustrade will not be gone forever: it will be used again later when we renovate the stairways leading to the railway platforms in Parnassusweg.
From 2027: permanent metro platforms
In 2027 at the latest, the new Brittenpassage will open and the existing Minervapassage will close, enabling us to increase its height, widen and modernise it. From then on, the metros will depart from the completely new platforms on the other side of the station. We are already in the process of building the new platforms, which will be between the existing Minervapassage and the new Brittenpassage, alongside the railway platforms. From 2031, the renovated Minervapassage will open, and Amsterdam Zuid will then boast two fully-fledged station passageways.
