As of 1 November 2026, Amsterdam Zuid station will have a second passenger tunnel: the Brittenpassage. It is needed because the current station entrance, the Minervapassage, can barely cope with the number of train and metro passengers. We expect the number of public transport users to continue rising, exceeding 250,000 by 2030. The Brittenpassage is 15 metres wide and fitted with new lifts, escalators, shops and an indoor bicycle parking facility for 2,000 bicycles.
Regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station
The extra passageway is part of the complete regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station, which is intended to give passengers more space and comfort. The Brittenpassage is located around 200 metres west of the current Minervapassage. Once the Brittenpassage opens, we will close the Minervapassage for several years for major redevelopment. The Brittenpassage will then be the only entrance to Station Amsterdam Zuid for the coming years.
Construction of the Brittenpassage
We built the Brittenpassage straight through the embankment that carries the tracks and the A10 Zuid. Work started with the roof, which consists of seven enormous concrete roof sections. Because of their size, we built them all on site within the confined space available. To slide them into position, we had to temporarily remove sections of the motorway and the tracks several times. After five years of roof construction (from 2019 to 2024), the major excavation could begin. We removed no fewer than 50,000 cubic metres of sand, which is what really gave the passageway its shape. The following years were devoted to the finishing works.
