The contract for the Tunnel project was provisionally awarded on 23 July 2024. Although Van Hattum en Blankevoort is the official contracting party, in practice the VolkerWessels Infra consortium and its various specialised companies will be responsible for the construction. Van Hattum en Blankevoort will take care of the project management and civil concrete works, KWS is the specialist in logistics and ground and roadworks, VSF will be responsible for the specialist foundation technology and pressurised walls/roof construction method and Vialis for the technical (tunnel) systems.
Seated from left to right: Lars Sigmond, financial director; Bart van Eijk, managing director of Van Hattum en Blankevoort; Patricia Zorko, acting director-general of the Public Works Department (Rijkswaterstaat); Hans Ruijter, Zuidasdok director; and Gerald Paalman, CEO of Volker Wessels Infra.
Two contracts
Zuidasdok is awarding two contracts: one for the design of the northern and southern tunnel and one for the construction of the tunnel. In the first contract, we are starting with a joint construction team that will develop the design until the end of 2026.
Space for the city
The construction of the motorway tunnel will create more space for the city and its residents and there will be more space for green areas. It will also help reduce noise nuisance for the local community. At the same time, the tunnel will make it possible to expand Amsterdam Zuid station. Two additional railway tracks and an extra railway platform will enable international trains to depart from Amsterdam Zuid. This will take the pressure off Amsterdam Central Station and offer an alternative to short-haul air travel from Schiphol.
Improved safety and traffic flow
At a length of more than 1 km, the tunnel will be to the north and south of Amsterdam Zuid station. In it, will be a wider A10 Zuid, in which local traffic and through-traffic have been separated from each other. This, combined with the work on the De Nieuwe Meer and Amstel junctions, will improve traffic flow and make it safer. It will also create a better connection with the northern Randstad, which is of regional and national importance.
Third project
The construction of the motorway tunnel is the third project in the Zuidasdok programme. In 2018, the first work started on the project for the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station. At the end of 2022, the contract for the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction was awarded.
Construction work on the tunnel is expected to start in 2027.
