Following the successful public procurement procedures for the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station, the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction and the tunnel under the A10 Zuid, this is the fourth project in the Zuidasdok programme to be put out to tender. As part of the reconstruction of the Amstel junction, a total of 20 viaducts are to be adapted or built, new road connections created, two new bridges built across the Amstel, a range of noise barriers built and the existing southern Rozenoordbrug bridge replaced. The existing cycle link across the southern Rozenoordbrug bridge will be moved to the new southern bridge. Changes will also be made to the city road network. For example, Ouderkerkerdijk will become a designated street for bicycles between the Amstel and the Police Academy. Changes are also planned for Europaboulevard.
Separating traffic
As a result of the reconstruction of the Amstel junction, there will be a separation between local traffic and through-traffic. The aim of this is to improve traffic flow and traffic safety, making the northern Randstad and Amsterdam more accessible. The main carriageway for through-traffic will have four lanes in both directions and the parallel carriageway for local traffic will have two lanes.
One contractor, two sets of works
The project has been divided into two sets of works: the construction of the southern main and parallel carriageways and the construction of the northern main and parallel carriageways. The southern main and parallel carriageways will be built first because of the southern Rozenoordbrug bridge across the Amstel, which must be replaced by 2032 at the latest. The contract for the project is expected to be awarded in the autumn of 2025 to a single contractor. The awarding of the contract will commission the southern main and parallel carriageways. The northern main and parallel carriageways will be commissioned when the financial resources become available and the contractor has demonstrated effective performance on the work reconstructing the south side of the junction.
Schedule
The public procurement procedure and awarding of the contract are expected to take around a year. This will be followed by a design and preparation phase. Construction is expected to start in 2027.
