From 2028, the new flyover at the De Nieuwe Meer junction will take local traffic from the S108/Amstelveenseweg access road to the A4 Schiphol/Rotterdam. In order to prepare for that, we previously moved the entire carriageway slightly to the left. Over two weekends, we will now be working on the other side of the road. Because of the works, the connecting road between the A10 and the A4 Schiphol/Rotterdam will be closed for two weekends.
Earth-retaining structure
As is often the case, our work will start with the installation of sheet piling. We are doing this during the first weekend (starting on Friday, 31 January) between the hard shoulder and the embankment on the right side of the road. The sheet piling will ensure the road remains stable when we begin digging up the embankment next to it. That is where we will later be building an additional section of motorway and an abutment to support the new flyover.
Possible reduction in maximum speed after first weekend
Installing sheet piling so close to the connecting road between the A10 Zuid and A4 Schiphol/Rotterdam can cause damage to the carriageway. We are therefore anticipating the need for some repair works during that first weekend starting on Friday 31 January. It is possible that we will not have enough time during that weekend to fully repair the road surface; you should therefore expect some disruption and longer journey times in the week starting Monday, 3 February. We will then complete the repair works in the second weekend starting on Friday, 7 February.
Portal
At the point where the S108 access road from Amstelveenseweg will ultimately merge with the A4, there is currently still a portal gantry in place (support structure above the road where the blue road signs are). In the second weekend starting on Friday, 7 February, we will be moving this further to the west, so it is no longer obstructing the road. To do that, we will be building foundations there on both sides of the motorway that will ultimately support this portal gantry. When the foundations have been built, we will move the portal gantry to a new location.
New section of motorway
When the weekend works have been completed, we will immediately start work digging up the embankment next to the sheet piling. We are doing this in stages. We will start by digging up enough soil to make it possible to reinforce the sheet piling with tieback anchors – these are iron rods that will keep the sheet piling in position when the support from the embankment is no longer there. We will then dig up the rest of the embankment. This will create the work space needed next to the existing road to lay a new section of road using reinforced soil (layers of soil alternating with reinforcement materials). Ultimately, this is the location where traffic from the new flyover will merge with the traffic on the existing connecting road.
