Construction work on the second permanent railway platform for tracks 1 and 2 above the second passenger tunnel, the Brittenpassage, is running according to schedule. The Nieuw-Zuid construction consortium (Mobilis, Boskalis and Van Gelder) have already been working in the Brittenpassage on the walls that will support the new platform. Above ground, construction workers are now hard at work on the platform itself. On 27 March, the new, permanent railway platform will again be accessible and railway services from and to Amsterdam Zuid station will resume their normal timetable.
Steel structure and a lot of concrete
Construction work on the new platform started with a completely new steel structure. Sheets of prefab concrete were then placed on top of it. On top of that, we are adding a layer of reinforcement onto which we will pour concrete. This is because the platform needs to be strong enough not only to support large numbers of passengers, but also the weight of the new platform roofs. As soon as the concrete has hardened, the Nieuw-Zuid construction consortium can finish off the work on the platform, including installing sections of walk-on glass. This glass will soon allow daylight to penetrate into the Brittenpassage. The platform roofs will be added to both platforms later in 2025.
Second railway platform
We followed exactly the same sequence back in January on the other railway platform at Amsterdam Zuid station (serving platforms 3 and 4). We replaced that temporary railway platform above the Brittenpassage with a new, permanent one. The trains also ran a modified timetable. Last time was several days shorter. This is because ProRail is carrying out major maintenance on the connection to and from Schiphol from 12 until 26 March. That work requires one railway track to be taken out of service at Amsterdam Zuid station. We are taking advantage of the extra time that this gives us to build the new railway platform.
Crowded at Amsterdam Zuid station
Because of the closed railway platform, Amsterdam Zuid station has been very crowded at certain times in recent days (especially at rush hour). You may have noticed this particularly at the access gates and on the platform itself. Trains are running according to a modified timetable from 12 until 26 March 2025. Where possible, you are advised to avoid the rush hour and/or work from home. If that is not an option, make sure you consult the NS journey planner or 9292.nl several days in advance.
Regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station
Amsterdam Zuid station is bursting at the seams. In order to be able to process the growing number of passengers, we are building an additional entrance: the Brittenpassage. It will be 15 m wide and feature shops and a bicycle park. As soon as the Brittenpassage is open, by 2027 at the latest, major work will begin on the existing passageway: the Minervapassage. This is being widened from 12 to 40 m and will have shops and amenities on both sides. The regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station is part of Zuidasdok.
