Dozens of interested attendees listened to Zuidasdok’s plans on Tuesday, 31 March 2026. This year, 15 weekend closures of the A10 Zuid are planned. In addition, the A10 Zuid underpass at the Amstelveenseweg will be closed from 3 July to 17 August for the construction of new viaducts. Some works may cause noise disturbance, for example during the installation of 500 foundation piles and sheet piling works.

During and after the presentation, there was time for questions, including about other Zuidasdok projects such as the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station and the construction of the A10 tunnel. Below you will find the most important questions and answers.

Questions about widening the A10 Zuid

The works are necessary so we can widen the A10 Zuid between the De Nieuwe Meer and Amstel junctions. The motorway will have six lanes in each direction: four for through traffic and two for local traffic (access roads and exits S108 and S109). At the heart of Zuidas, the motorway will be diverted underground, allowing for the expansion of Amsterdam Zuid station. Above ground, a major transport hub will be created for train, metro, bus and tram traffic, along with public space.

  • Will the S108 and S109 be closed at the same time?
No, closures will be carefully planned to minimise disruption.

  • How high will the noise barriers be?
The renewed A10 Zuid will feature various noise barriers, with their height and length tailored to the surrounding environment. Read more about the noise barriers

  • When will the Nieuwe Meersluis be closed?
For the widening of the A10, new bridges will be built over the Schinkel and existing bridges will be removed. This may temporarily affect shipping traffic. Notices to Scheepvaart (BAS) will provide information at least six weeks in advance. Read more about the Schinkelbrug bridge

  • Where will the Helmholtz resonators be located?
A total of 55 sound-dampening boxes will be installed beneath the northernmost Schinkelbrug (bridge 2) to absorb noise. Read more about the Helmholtz resonators

Questions about the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station

Amsterdam Zuid is the fastest-growing station in the Netherlands and is well on its way to becoming the second-largest station in Amsterdam. To accommodate current and future passenger numbers, the station is being expanded. The station is currently located between the carriageways of the A10 Zuid, but once the A10 Zuid is diverted underground, space will become available.

  • When will the Brittenpassage open?
By 2027 at the latest. Read more about the Brittenpassage

  • What will the station look like?
Just outside the station, you will find tram and bus stops, taxi ranks and a kiss-and-ride area where passengers can be dropped off and picked up. We are widening the existing station entrance, the Minervapassage, and adding a second entrance, the Brittenpassage. The station surroundings will offer a wide range of shops and facilities. Read more about the renewed station. In addition to regular train services, international trains may also call at the station in the future. On the south side of Amsterdam Zuid station, space has been reserved for an additional platform and a fifth and sixth track.

  • How long will the works take?
Zuidasdok will be completed by 2037 at the latest and will be delivered in phases. The first major milestone is the opening of the Brittenpassage, currently scheduled for no later than 2027.

  • What facilities will be added?
The train and metro platforms will be widened and fitted with new platform canopies. All platforms will be equipped with escalators, stairs and lifts. The Minervapassage will be widened (from 12 to 40 metres) and raised (from approximately 2.5 metres below the metro tracks to more than 4 metres). A second passenger tunnel will be added near Benjamin Brittenstraat (the west side of the station): the Brittenpassage. The public transport terminal will have ample bicycle facilities on all sides. There will be a total of approximately 15,000 bicycle parking spaces.

Questions about the construction of the A10 tunnel

At the heart of Zuidas, the A10 Zuid will be diverted underground over a distance of more than one kilometre. The widened motorway section between the Buitenveldert cemetery and Beatrixpark will be diverted into a tunnel. This will create around 100,000 square metres of space above ground.

  • How long will the new tunnel be?
    Approximately 1 kilometre.

  • Where will the tunnel be located?
Two tunnels are planned: one on the south side and one on the north side of the A10. The tunnel will be located between the existing A10 Zuid and the surrounding office buildings. To make space, part of the current A10 Zuid will need to be moved on the northern side.

  • How many tubes will the new tunnel have?
The tunnel will consist of four tubes. The design includes a northern and a southern tunnel. In each direction, there will be a main carriageway for through traffic and a parallel carriageway for local traffic to and from Amsterdam Zuid. In total, there will be twelve lanes, separating through and local traffic.

  • Will the S108 and S109 connections remain after the tunnel is completed?
Yes, the exits to the RAI (S109) and the Amstelveenseweg (S108) will remain. The access and exit roads will be accessed via the parallel carriageways.
