During the past sun-drenched April weekend, street artist Matthew May was able to transform the dreary concrete tiles in Eduard van Beinumstraat into a veritable 3D artwork. Plenty of Zuidas residents and visitors stopped by regularly to see what wonders would emerge on the square next to Zuidplein and the Wagamama restaurant. The answer: a (literal) glimpse into the future motorway tunnel.

A10 Zuid tunnel

At the heart of Zuidas, the A10 Zuid is set to disappear underground across a length of over 1 km. Between the Buitenveldert cemetery and Beatrixpark, the widened section of motorway is being diverted into a tunnel. Many people think that the tunnel will be underneath Amsterdam Zuid station, but this is not the case. The 3D artwork shows the exact location of the northern section of the future motorway tunnel. We are designing both the northern and southern tunnel slightly outside of the station. This location will now be clearly visible.

Look through your camera

Street artist Matthew May has a tip for anyone who wants to have a good look at the artwork: ‘For the best perspective, stand on the yellow footsteps and look through the camera on your phone or with one eye closed. This will intensify and improve the illusion of depth.’ So, be sure to visit Eduard van Beinumstraat, where the artwork can be seen for around a year (also depending on the weather).
