Many people will remember the six-week summer closure of Amstelveenseweg in 2025. During that period, we closed the road beneath the viaduct to construct five new support structures for the widening of the viaduct on both its northern and southern sides. In the summer of 2026, we will continue work on the new roof structure that will rest on these supports. Between 3 July and 17 August, we will lift girders (concrete beams) measuring approximately 37 metres onto the support structures. The road surface for the new A10 Zuid lanes will then be constructed on top of these girders.

Disruption on Amstelveenseweg: 3 July-17 August 2026
During this period, there will be disruption for motorists, public transport passengers and, on several nights, also for cyclists and pedestrians. Below is an overview of closures and diversion routes:

  • Traffic travelling towards Amsterdam city centre will be diverted via the A10 Zuid and can turn around at S109 Amsterdam–Rivierenbuurt.
  • Traffic travelling towards Amstelveen will be diverted via the A4 and can turn around at exit 1 Amsterdam–Sloten.
  • Buses, cyclists and pedestrians can continue to use Amstelveenseweg. Exception: On the evenings and nights of 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 July, between 21.00 and 07.30, pedestrians and cyclists will follow a diversion route via Piet Kranenbergpad. Buses will also operate via an alternative route.
  • The S108 Amsterdam–Oud Zuid access road and exit will remain open. Exception: During the evenings and nights of 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 July.
  • The metro station will only be accessible via the western side of Amstelveenseweg. Exception: During the evenings and nights of 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 July.
  • Between 4 and 25 July, tram 24 will not operate between the Olympiaplein and De Boelelaan/VU stops.

Redesign of the junction

In 2027, we will begin work on the junction beneath the viaduct. The junction will be redesigned with a smarter layout. Traffic travelling between Amsterdam and Amstelveen will be separated from traffic heading to and from the A10 Zuid, making the situation clearer and safer for road users. The new S108 access road will connect seamlessly to the redesigned junction, helping to improve traffic flow. The new layout is scheduled for completion in 2028.

Widening of the A10 Zuid

Between the Amstel and De Nieuwe Meer junctions, the A10 Zuid will be widened from four to six lanes in each direction: four lanes for through traffic and two lanes for local traffic. This will improve both road safety and traffic flow. For this purpose, we are building or renovating 14 viaducts in and around the De Nieuwe Meer junction, including the viaduct at Amstelveenseweg.
