Next to the additional passenger tunnel at Amsterdam Zuid station, the Brittenpassage, we will be inserting sheet piles into the ground on 6 July 2024. The work will happen between the metro tracks. Because of the risk of subsidence, there will be no metros running on that day between Amsterdam Zuid station and Amstelveenseweg. However, the North/South line (metro 52) will run its normal route. There will also be a replacement bus service between Amsterdam Zuid and Amstelveenseweg. We will be using vibration to insert the sheet piles into the ground between 07.00 and 21.00, which could cause some noise disruption for the local area.

Subsidence

In 2023, there were two occasions when we experienced subsidence underneath the railway and metro tracks when installing sheet piles. Although we have investigated the cause, this has not been clearly identified. For this reason, we are continually monitoring the condition of the tracks. And, in order to be on the safe side, we are not permitting any metros to run during the works. If any subsidence occurs during the works, we will repair it.

Delay

The instances of subsidence resulted in some delay to the works on the retaining walls. Since mid-May 2024, we have been working extra-long days in order to make up for the delay. On 6 July 2024, we will insert the final sheet piles into the ground between the two metro tracks. From 6 July 2024, we will then begin a seven-week period in which the most northerly metro track will be out of service. This is because we are increasing the height of the metro track and platform, which is required for the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station. During this period (6 July to 25 August 2024), there will be a reduced metro service running to and from Amsterdam Zuid station.

Regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station in 2024
As part of the Zuidasdok project, work to update and expand Amsterdam Zuid station has been ongoing since 2018. In 2024, the structural work on the second station passageway is taking place and work is being done to bring the most northerly metro track to the right position and height. The Brittenpassage is scheduled to open by 2027 at the latest. Take a look at how we are regenerating the station in phases (in Dutch).
