Zuidasdok is preparing Beethovenstraat for the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station and the construction of the A10 tunnel. This includes removing several dozen disused cables and pipelines and installing a culvert just south of the A10 viaduct – more about that later. Further along Beethovenstraat, we are resurfacing the carriageway and redesigning the Beethovenstraat/Ravellaan junction, including a safer pedestrian and cycle crossing.
Early on the morning of Monday, 17 August, Beethovenstraat will reopen to motor traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians will continue to be diverted via either the eastern or western side of Beethovenstraat for a while longer.
North side of the viaduct
Near AkzoNobel, cables and pipelines have been removed to make way for construction of the A10 tunnel. We are now laying a temporary road surface. Once this has been completed, Beethovenplein – the road running past AkzoNobel, Stibbe and Sint Nicolaas Lyceum towards Prinses Irenestraat – will reopen. We will wait to lay the final asphalt surface until all other works in and around this location have been completed, currently expected by the end of October. This means the asphalt paving equipment only needs to be brought in once, helping to minimise disruption for the surrounding area.
Beneath the viaduct
To remove the cables and pipelines, we are working our way southwards. We have now reached the area beneath the viaduct, where we are currently breaking open the road. Once this has been completed, we will also remove the cables and pipelines here, up to the location where the culvert will be installed. Beneath the viaduct, however, we are working from west (the station side) to east. This means the cycle path on the eastern side will remain closed until 1 November. After that, the cycle path on the western side will close for work on the station redevelopment, while the eastern cycle path (next to the Valley residential towers) will reopen.
South side of the viaduct
The culvert mentioned above is a concrete pipe with a diameter of one metre. It will provide an underground connection between the waterways on either side of Beethovenstraat. On the western side of Beethovenstraat, the culvert pipes have now been installed and connected to the rainwater drainage chambers. The cycle path and footpath above have been reinstated, allowing us to continue extending the culvert eastwards towards the water between the A10 Zuid and Valley. De Boelelaan – Beethovenstraat/Van Leijenberghlaan junction
The junction of De Boelelaan and Beethovenstraat/Van Leijenberghlaan has now been redesigned. Previously, traffic in three of the four directions – for example, from the Beethovenstraat to the Van Leijenberghlaan – received a green light simultaneously for travelling straight ahead and turning right, or for travelling straight ahead and turning left. As a result, turning traffic had to wait for cyclists and pedestrians crossing the junction. This has now changed: turning traffic on every side of the junction now has its own dedicated turning phase.
Beethovenstraat – Mahlerlaan/Ravellaan junction
The traffic signals have been adapted and the surface layer of the asphalt has been replaced, complete with new road markings. The cycle crossing has been moved closer to the junction, allowing cyclists to cross in a straight line – previously, the route included a slight bend. During this and next week, we will work on the cycle path and footpath on the eastern side of Beethovenstraat, alongside plots C and D, where The Harmony development will be built. When schools return on 17 August, this route between De Boelelaan and Ravellaan will reopen.
