Rising construction costs put paid to Conservatorium

This is according to an announcement issued on 6 April 2022 by the Executive Board of the Amsterdam School of the Arts (AHK), of which the Conservatorium is a part. Current prices, combined with real uncertainty with regard to future price rises, mean that it is not thought responsible for the AHK to proceed with the project.

A lot of preparation

The intention was for the Conservatorium van Amsterdam to establish an annex in the Kapel & Convict buildings, a municipal monument in Beatrixpark. We previously announced that the site would be used for educational facilities, combined with a stage for performances and hospitality/catering. This is because the Conservatorium building in Oosterdokskade is bursting at the seams and there is an urgent need for extra space. The initial steps towards achieving that were taken in 2019, when the AHK and the City of Amsterdam signed a letter of intent. This was followed less than a year later by an agreement, in the light of a positive feasibility study conducted in early 2020. Both parties then continued to develop their plans. In April 2021, we were able to present a definitive plan. The preparatory work also started in 2021.

Alternative way forward

The world has changed substantially in a short space of time. The municipal Zuidas organisation and AKH have done their utmost to identify ways in which the project can still be realised, but without success. In the period ahead, Zuidas will consult on an alternative strategy for Kapel & Convict as well as the possibilities for a temporary solution. We will also assess whether and when we will be removing the foundations for the construction road (the ‘sandbags’). In the meantime, the buildings will remain under the management of Zwerfkei in order to prevent vacancy issues.
