Work in Wielingenstraat continues on the other side

Since September of last year, we have been carrying out major maintenance works in Wielingenstraat. The section next to the housing came first and will be completed by the end of May. We will then immediately continue on the other side of the street. We are replacing all of the road surface between the central reservation and the cycle path alongside the RAI and relandscaping the access road to the RAI (P9). By October of this year, the work on a safe and green Wielingenstraat will be complete.

29 May – early October: traffic diversion

Throughout the whole period, car traffic heading from Stadionweg in the direction of Scheldeplein will be diverted via Churchillaan, as it was previously. Traffic heading in the opposite direction towards Diepenbrockstraat and Stadionweg will be able to make use of the new lane on the northern side of Wielingenstraat. The waste containers on that side are also now in use again. The new cycle path has been open since the end of April.

At the end of May 2023, it will be the turn of the RAI side

Temporary measures in side streets

The temporary two-way traffic in Haringvlietstraat, Krammerstraat and Eendrachtstraat (before the closure of Wielingenstraat) will be discontinued. The extra bicycle parking spaces will also be removed and we will reinstate the entrance and exit to the car park in Krammerstraat. That means that the car park will be inaccessible for up to five days at the end of May and users will be approached individually and offered a temporary alternative.

Parking

During the work on the RAI side, all of the parking spaces in this working area will be unavailable. However, the new parking spaces alongside the cycle lane on the housing side will be in use again. Local residents will still be able to use an extended parking permit and had been informed about this in a letter to residents.

19 June – 14 July: closure of RAI cycle path

Starting on 19 June, Waternet will be working for around seven weeks on the sewer, part of which runs under the cycle path and part under the lane alongside the RAI. The new pipelines need to be inserted under a large drinking water supply line, which is why this work will take a relatively long time. The cycle path along the RAI will be out of action for around four of the seven weeks – cyclists travelling in the direction of Scheldeplein will be diverted via Beatrixpark for Herman Heijermansweg until 19 July.

Diepenbrockstraat

Further along Wielingenstraat, major maintenance works have also started in Diepenbrockstraat. These works will follow a similar sequence to the work in Wielingenstraat and are expected to take until April 2024. For this reason, the whole of Diepenbrockstraat will be closed between 1 and 5 May 2023 – and a temporary lane in the direction of Stadionweg will be put in place. There will also be a temporary cycle lane in both directions.
