Nine days of work on the metro at Amsterdam Zuid station

We are lengthening the platform where metros 50 and 51 depart in the direction of Gein and Central Station. The platform will be extended in the direction of Beethovenstraat, enabling metro trains to stop slightly further east in the future. This will create space for the renovation of the Minervapassage, the existing station passageway at Amsterdam Zuid station. This passenger tunnel will be much wider and taller in the future, which is why we are now replacing part of the roof.

Modified service and other construction works

From 19 until 27 August, metro 50 will run a modified service and metro 50 will not be running in either direction. One railway track will also be out of service for two days. In addition, we are making use of these nine days to carry out major works in Parnassusweg. This includes installing sheet piles between the metro tracks to build a construction pit.

More roof sections for the Minervapassage

In June 2023, we moved the first huge concrete roof section for the Minervapassage into position. According to the current schedule, we will be inserting a further roof section underneath the most northerly metro track at Amsterdam Zuid station in 2024, and this will be followed by the roof section underneath the most southerly metro track in 2025. By lengthening the existing platform, we are already making space for this third roof section. The roof sections for the railway tracks are already at the right height but also need to be renewed. This will be done during a later phase.

Metro platforms set to move to the other side

The extended metro platform will be temporary: ultimately, in the new situation, all of the metro platforms will be on the west side of the existing station passageway. They will then be between the Minervapassage and the second passenger tunnel, the Brittenpassage, enabling the platforms to be accessed from both passageways. The Brittenpassage is set to open in 2027 at the latest. The construction of the second station passageway is a crucial step in the process of increasing the capacity of busy Amsterdam Zuid station. After its renovation, this station will have passenger numbers similar to those at Amsterdam Central.
