We previously reported about the gigantic project in Parnassusweg, which involved demolishing a section of the existing metro viaduct. This was followed by part two of the operation: the construction of the new viaduct. On behalf of the Nieuw-Zuid Construction Consortium, track-building firm Swietelsky is now doing the final work on the track, which is scheduled for completion on Monday, 26 August. The Amsterdam local transport company (GVB) will then start using the new metro viaduct for lines 50 and 51 in the direction of Isolatorweg.

Building supports
In the months from April to July, we started preparing for the operation by building supports for the new metro viaduct. On both sides of Parnassusweg, between the cycle path and the traffic carriageway, we inserted foundation piles into the ground. Concrete was poured over these to hold them together, creating underground foundations known as footings. We then put the columns in place that will support the deck of the metro.
Demolishing the viaduct
In June, we demolished the existing metro viaduct, starting by removing the track. We then sawed into a section of the deck to enable us to lift out the separate sections. The sawing was done by means of hydrodemolition, where you start by cutting into the concrete and then remove it by high-pressure jet spray. This ensures that the steel reinforcement in the concrete remains intact. This was necessary, because part of the viaduct is set to stay to enable the metro trains to reach the railyard on the other side of Parnassusweg. The demolition work had a lot of impact, including temporary traffic diversions and even the complete closure of Parnassusweg.
Why a new metro viaduct?
In the summer of 2024, we moved the most northerly metro track (used by lines 50 and 51 in the direction of Isolatorweg) slightly further to the north. This is necessary in order to make room next to the new passenger tunnel at Amsterdam Zuid station, the Brittenpassage, for the metro platforms (and the stairway/escalator and lift) we are building there. In order to move the track to the north, we built this new metro viaduct in Parnassusweg.
Building the viaduct
In early August, it was time to start building the new viaduct. This was done in the same order as the demolition, but in reverse. That means we started by hoisting all the beams into position.
On top of the beams, we poured a deck of reinforced concrete. At the same time, we made repairs to the existing viaduct. We had previously removed the concrete on the side using hydrodemolition, leaving only the reinforcement protruding from the remaining concrete. We then laid an edge beam against this and filled the reinforcement with concrete.
We are now working on the final touches: laying the metro track. If all runs smoothly, metros 50 and 51 will be heading towards Isolatorweg across the new viaduct starting on the morning of Monday, 26 August.
Summer work at four locations at Amsterdam Zuid station
In the summer of 2024, we are not only working in Parnassusweg. On the east side of the station, above Beethovenstraat, we raised the height of the metro viaduct. Next to that, above the Minervapassage, we moved a new roof section into position. We also did the same thing above the new Brittenpassage, right next to Parnassusweg.
