Parnassusweg is currently at the centre of a large number of works. This has actually been the case since the summer of 2023, when we closed the road for two months to traffic heading out of the city. We then began work widening the existing viaduct and building a new metro viaduct across the road. The widening of the existing viaduct used by metros travelling in the direction of Isolatorweg, and moving it slightly further towards the A10, are necessary in order to make space for the new metro platforms at Amsterdam Zuid station. The metro platforms currently point towards Beethovenstraat, but by 2027 at the latest, they will be directly opposite the railway platforms, between the existing Minervapassage and the new Brittenpassage.
Sheet piling and supports
As is so often the case, the construction work on the metro viaduct started with the insertion of sheet piling and work on the foundations. From April through to the summer of 2024, we worked on building the supports for the new viaduct. In the summer, we first demolished part of the viaduct before building the new viaduct directly alongside it. This job was completed at the end of August.
Technical facility
Also in Parnassusweg, a brand-new technical facility appeared, which will partly be used to supply power for the metros. All of the systems in the building, located between two metro viaducts, are currently undergoing testing. If all goes well, they will be in use by the end of this year.
Next metro viaduct
But this is not the end of it. Work is already far advanced on the supports for the next metro viaduct. This viaduct is intended for line 52 (the North/South line), which, like the other metro stations on this line, will also have two tracks at the new Amsterdam Zuid station. In 2025 and 2026, we will be working on the supports on the station side. When the Brittenpassage is open, we will complete construction of the viaduct.
Remaining work
Following a summer of intensive work, some work still remains to be done and this is also causing disruption to traffic. This includes works on the railings of the viaduct above the road and tram. And the work to reinstate the cycle path and footpath on the west side. The cycle path will open before the end of the year.
Preparations for tunnel construction
The works in Parnassusweg are not only about the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station. Tentative planning has already started on the preparatory work for the new tunnel into which the A10 Zuid will be diverted, at the heart of Zuidas. These preparations involve the removal of cables and pipelines that are no longer in use. These include a gas pipeline, a water pipeline, data cabling, old tram cables and a sewer. It is possible that there is still some old sheet piling left in the ground. To find out if this is the case, we are digging test trenches. This will cause disruption to cyclists and pedestrians in Parnassusweg. We will also be removing bicycle racks from mid-November. We will provide further updates in due course.
The CubeHouse
Construction work on The CubeHouse is also in full swing, on the corner of Parnassusweg and Arnold Schönberglaan, in other words right next to the viaduct where there is already so much work. This involves some transport by truck, which goes via Parnassusweg (and soon also via Benjamin Brittenstraat). Materials and equipment can be lifted safely within the construction site. Extra precautionary measures are being taken if smaller materials accidentally fall to the ground. In order to protect road users, part of the safety zone runs across Parnassusweg. On the east side of the road (in the direction of the city), contractor Visser & Smit Bouw is installing a crash deck: a temporary covered scaffolding structure that ensures any objects do not end up on the public road. Work to install this crash deck will be done in the evening hours starting from 21 October. Depending on the weather, this work should take around one day. Cyclists and pedestrians will need to cross to the west side of Parnassusweg. Traffic controllers will briefly halt cars and buses during lifting work. As soon as the crash deck is in place, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to pass underneath safely.
Even more?
Yes, a lot more. Work on the station will also continue in 2025 and 2026 and users of Parnassusweg will still face disruption. Construction work on the tunnel for the A10 Zuid is also yet to start. That will take a while, but disruption is set to be part of the picture in Parnassusweg for a long time ahead.
