Over the coming years, the A10 Zuid between the De Nieuwe Meer and Amstel junctions will be widened from four to six lanes in each direction: four for through traffic and two for traffic travelling to and from Amsterdam Zuid. In the future, local traffic travelling from the A10 Zuid to the A10 West will use a new carriageway with a hard shoulder, to be built where the S107 Henk Sneevlietweg exit is currently located. The exit will therefore move further towards Anthony Fokkerweg, onto a new section of the A10 West. This work also involves widening the viaduct at Luchtvaartstraat. During the weekend starting on Friday, 2 October 2026, we will lift two concrete girders into position for the widened viaduct. We will carry out the work from the closed A10 West in the direction of Leeuwarden/Zaanstad.
Connections from A4 and A10 Zuid to A10 West closed
From 22.00 on Friday, 2 October 2026 until 10.00 on Sunday, 4 October, it will not be possible to use the road connecting the A4 and A10 Zuid to the A10 West. Traffic will be diverted via the A9/A5 or via the A2/A10 Oost and A10 Noord. Please allow an additional 10-30 minutes for your journey. The underpass beneath the viaduct at Overschiestraat will also be closed to motorised traffic. During the lifting operation, pedestrians and cyclists will be stopped briefly while the girders are being lifted into position.
Making room
Work to widen the A10 West began several years ago with the relocation and removal of cables and pipes. This created space for the foundations needed for the widening of the A10 West, including the installation of sheet piling. Following on from work carried out by Waternet earlier this year, we installed sheet piling and bored piles at the viaduct near Overschiestraat. This created a construction pit in which we can build the widened section of the viaduct. On the viaduct itself, we removed the outer edge and drilled reinforcing bars into the side of the deck. These are needed to connect the existing viaduct to the new widened section.
Widening the viaduct
We then removed soil to create working space for the concrete work on the abutments. After installing the tubular piles, we constructed the foundation footing and the walls. This coming weekend, we will lift the new girders onto the abutments, and the widened section of the viaduct will really begin to take shape.
What happens next?
We expect to install new edge elements and railings on the viaduct in early November. You can expect similar disruption to that of this coming weekend. We will keep you informed.
