But the ZuidPlus builders currently working on roof sections 2 and 3 for the new passenger tunnel at Amsterdam Zuid station are certainly in a tight spot. The first section was inserted into position in November 2019. The construction site cannot be seen from the street and is located on the dike between the metro tracks. This minimal space is the immediate challenge faced by the builders: there is insufficient room to build the two huge roof sections (each 70 metres in length, 6 metres wide and 2 metres thick) at the same time. In other words, they really have to be done one by one. From 2 to 6 April 2021, we will be putting the abutments in place, on which the roof sections will rest. After that, we will begin construction work on the second roof section. We will insert both sections into position in August 2021. The roof of the new station passageway will consist of a total of seven sections.

This week, we are making the wooden formwork for the first roof section, similar to a mould. This will then be reinforced to strengthen the concrete. In late December, we will pour 250 cubic metres of concrete into the formwork. It will be delivered in a continuous flow of trucks. After that, one roof section will be ready to dry. After we have added a protective coating and sand to this new roof section, we will be working from here on the next roof section in April 2021. This will ensure efficient use of the limited space.

Sheet piling

Trains and metros regularly pass the construction site, almost touching it. You have a good view of the site from public transport. In order to guarantee the stability of the tracks, the work site has been separated off with sheet piling (the brown corrugated sheeting shown on the photo above). This ensures that public transport is not disrupted by our construction work.

Two roof sections for new station passageway in 2021

Work on the additional passenger tunnel for Amsterdam Zuid station, the Brittenpassage, is slowly continuing. In April and August 2021, we will be inserting the second and third roof sections into position. Work outdoors to prepare for this is already starting on 14 September 2020.

Tendering process for new Amsterdam Zuid station starts on 27 October

The tendering process for the renovation and extension of Amsterdam Zuid Station will be officially launched on 27 October 2020. This is according to an announcement made by Zuidasdok today. The preliminary announcement was published on TenderNed on 3 September.
