The team of Bouwcombinatie Nieuw-Zuid will be carrying out the work 24/7 on the 11 days between 22 July and 3 August. It will be impossible to carry out the work without causing noise. The work will include removing the A10, dismantling the track and platform, pouring concrete and cutting and grinding rails. From Sunday 24 July up to and including Wednesday 27 July we will be generating a great deal of noise on our site next to the Arnold Schönberglaan, on the south side of Amsterdam Zuid station, under the southern lane of the A10. Between 7.00 a.m. and 7.00 p.m. we will be vibro driving eighty sheetpiles into the ground. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as bad weather which prevents us from working or machinery breakdowns, we may work into the evenings and possibly on Thursday 28 July as well. Once installed the sheetpiles will form a steel wall which will hold back soil and water and will enable us to excavate a second passenger tunnel which is known as the Brittenpassage. On Tuesday 5 July 2022 we are organising a drop-in meeting for residents and other interested parties so that we can explain work in more detail.

Earth-retaining structure

We are going to drive the 80 steel sheetpiles, which are between 7 and 20 metres in length, into the ground, to a depth of no less than 15 metres below the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum (NAP) as preparation for the Brittenpassage, the extra tunnel which will allow passengers to access metros and trains in the future. This station passageway is being constructed in the extension of the Benjamin Brittenstraat and extends under the rails and the motorway. Later on we will excavate the soil and construct the Brittenpassage between the sheetpiles. The sheetpile walls create a so-called earth-retaining structure which is needed to ensure that the surrounding soil stays in place.

Installation of sheetpile walls by pressure or vibration

Sheetpiles can be installed in two ways, namely by pressing them into the ground or by vibration. The pressing method is always preferable because it is a quieter technique. The pressing method requires more equipment, such as cherry pickers or auxiliary cranes, which move the sheetpiles into place. Because we are going to be installing 135 tubular piles into the ground at the same time in a small area, there is insufficient space to work safely. What is more, the pressing method takes approximately twice as much time. Indeed, space and time are extremely limited throughout the entire operation. We have to carry out the work within the scheduled 11 day closure of the A10 Zuid motorway and we understand that this may inconvenience anyone living or working nearby.
