Work starts on Hogelandplein in Kop Zuidas

Between the Terrace Tower office building and the SUD apartment complex, there is currently just a large grassy hill. In the week commencing Monday, 23 January, a construction site will be set up on it and surrounded by fencing. Contractor Rots Maatwerk will then spend six months constructing Hogelandplein. In February 2021, we revealed the provisional design for the square. This was followed by the definitive design, with a few changes. Construction work has now started and, by this summer, the Kop Zuidas neighbourhood will have a new great place to meet: with plenty of greenery, ample seating and water babbling across natural stones into a small lake.

Work to continue until summer

The work will start with the removal of the grass hill. We will then be able to begin cabling and piping and installing the wells for rainwater. We will then add the foundations and raise the watercourse. After that, we will add lamp posts, seating and planters. Finally, we will prepare the paving and sow grass seed. The trees will have to wait a little: they are being planted in the autumn when they take root more easily.

Construction traffic and access

In order to minimise disruption, materials will be transported before 08.00 in the mornings and between 9.30 and 16.13. Construction traffic will run through Maaslandstraat, Gelrestraat and Gaasterlandstraat. Traffic controllers will be on hand to guide cars and cyclists. During two weekends in June, we will be closing the pavement in Gaasterlandstraat, when pedestrians will have to follow the signs in place at that time.

Noise nuisance and working hours

The work is likely to cause some noise: the foundations need to be sealed using a vibratory plate, the paving will be compacted in situ by means of vibration and large plant will be used to install the natural stone blocks. For this reason, we will be taking various measures to reduce disruption. We are also working on working days only between 07.00 and 17.00. Work will continue into Saturday only if absolutely necessary.

Kop Zuidas

In the area between Europaboulevard, the A10, Zorgvlied cemetery and the Zuidelijke Wandelweg, Kop Zuidas is being developed into a neighbourhood where people can both live and work. The completion of Crossover (before the summer of 2023) and The Newton (the end of 2023) means that the neighbourhood will see an additional 230 homes in 2023. Right next to Hogelandplein, there will also be a green entrance area. The demolition of the Old School building will also create room for housing and a park.

Hi R. T, The Hogelandplein is now being delivered in phases. The paving and natural stone surface around the water feature will have been laid in August. The fences around this part of the square will then be removed. Afther that, the lawn on and around the hill will be laid, and will then need about four to five weeks, depending on the weather, to get properly established. Finally, during the planting season in the autumn, the trees on the square will be planted.
