12 June: station entrance in Parnassusweg closed for 13 weeks

From 12 June until early September 2023, the entrance in Parnassusweg leading to the railway platforms will be closed. The bicycle parking facilities underneath the viaduct will also be out of use. It will still be possible to access the station during this period – pedestrians will be diverted via Eduard van Beinumstraat or Claude Debussylaan to the station entrances in Zuidplein and Mahlerplein respectively.

Cyclists can use the cycle lane parallel to Strawinskylaan on the northern side or cycle via Gustav Mahlerlaan to reach the station on the southern side of the A10. Bicycles can be parked in the three supervised, underground bicycle parks in Amaliaplein in Strawinskylaan, Zuidplein and Gustav Mahlerplein.

Significant disruption

Closing the station entrance for a prolonged period is likely to cause a lot of inconvenience. This is why the decision has been made to do this in the summer, in close consultation with NS and ProRail. There will be significantly fewer passengers at the station during that period. However, disruption will be inevitable. Passengers who normally use this entrance/exit to reach VU Amsterdam or VUmc will have a slightly longer walk. Stewards and signposts will be in place to draw passengers attention to the closure.

Preparation for the motorway tunnels

On 12 June, we are starting work removing the cables and pipelines, creating space for the motorway tunnels. In five years or so, in around 2028, Zuidasdok will start construction work here on a tunnel that will take the A10 underground. Near the centre of Zuidas, the motorway will be diverted underground for around a kilometre. This will create more than 100,000 m² of public space above ground. This is not only enough space for a larger station, with a bus and tram station next to the entrance, but also more green space for cyclists and pedestrians. The southern tunnel is scheduled for completion by 2034, the northern tunnel by 2035. These tunnels will run parallel to the railway and metro tracks.
