It is not often that we carry out this much work for Zuidasdok in a single weekend (10-13 April), while also closing the motorway in both directions. In addition, no trains ran to or from Amsterdam Zuid station throughout the entire weekend. At the station, we used three large cranes (positioned on the closed A10 Zuid) to lift 28 large sections of old platform canopies from above the train platforms. At the Schinkelbrug, two cranes lifted 26 concrete girders into position for the new bridge on the northern side.
Vivaldipassage and Amstel junction
As if that were not enough, we also worked on the future Vivaldipassage to the east of the station. We built part of the foundation for the new cycle and pedestrian tunnel between Antonio Vivaldistraat and Beatrixpark. At the Amstel junction, we carried out test drillings.
Complex work successfully completed
It was a very busy weekend, but the work was completed successfully and well within schedule. For example, construction consortium Nieuw-Zuid (Mobilis, Boskalis and Van Gelder) managed to move all platform canopies to the Spoorslag work site on Saturday. Over the coming weeks, the canopies will be dismantled there. Sunday was used to prepare the train platforms again for passengers on Monday morning. At the Schinkelbrug, lifting the girders required precision: two cranes worked together to lift each girder (one at each end), sometimes over distances of several dozen metres. By around 19.00 on Sunday evening, all 26 girders were in place.

Busy on the road
Traffic on the road was also impacted, especially on Saturday afternoon. Motorists using diversion routes via the A5 and A10 Noord experienced peak delays of around 45 minutes. On the diversion route via the A9, additional travel time was around 15 to 25 minutes. Significant congestion occurred around the Marathonbuurt, Amstelveenseweg, Zeilstraat and Hoofddorpplein, affecting both motorists and public transport. On Sunday, traffic was calmer everywhere and additional travel times were considerably shorter.
Zuidasdok
The works carried out over the weekend are part of the Zuidasdok project. In the coming years, we will widen the A10 Zuid between the De Nieuwe Meer and Amstel junctions. To make this possible, we are increasing the number of bridges across the Schinkel from five to eight. In the heart of Zuidas, the A10 Zuid will be routed underground over a distance of one kilometre. This will create space above ground for, among other things, the expansion of Amsterdam Zuid station. Here, we are building an additional passenger tunnel (the Brittenpassage) and renovating the existing Minervapassage.
