Railway and metro passengers had already noticed that part of the roof of the existing station entrance, the Minervapassage, had been removed. The stairway leading to metros 50 and 51 in the direction of Isolatorweg had already been closed. During the weekend, demolition work on the metro track and platform got started.
Removing beams
After that, on Saturday 13 July, we were also able to remove part of the passageway roof across which Metros 50 and 51 in the direction of Isolatorweg run. The roof was made of enormous beams of concrete. Despite the lifting work to remove these beams, passengers were still able to reach the railway or metro via Zuidplein. In early August, we will put back the metro platform, but more than 2 m higher: at the same height as the platform for line 52 (the North/South line).
Brittenpassage foundations
In the meantime, we worked on the foundations for the final section of the roof of Amsterdam Zuid station’s additional passageway, the Brittenpassage, Metros 50 and 51 will soon be running across that roof, when we insert it into position in a few weeks’ time.
Metro viaduct in Parnassusweg
A short distance away, above Parnassusweg, we also lifted out some beams, half of the existing metro viaduct. It will soon be replaced by a new metro viaduct slightly to the north of the existing one. This is needed for the new metro platforms, which will be permanently in position by 2027 at the latest.
Increasing the height of the metro track
We are now continuing work on increasing the height of the metro track. Next to the Minervapassage, it will be 2 m higher and more than half a metre higher above Beethovenstraat. By increasing the height of the track, we are bringing the roof of the Minervapassage under the metro tracks to the same height as it is under the railway tracks.
Disruption
Compared to the last weekend when we closed the A10 Zuid, between 28 June and 1 July, the disruption to traffic proved manageable. There was congestion on the A9 and delays on the city roads peaked at ten minutes. An accident on the A2 because of the most disruption. But there’s still plenty of work to be done this year. We already have two week enclosures behind us, but the A10 Zuid will be close for a total of eight weekends in 2024, for various different reasons, in different directions and at different locations. We will keep you informed of developments.
