Landscaping of public space around VU Amsterdam research building

The final construction work is now well and truly under way inside the VU Amsterdam research building. From Monday, 21 August until Friday, 20 October 2023, we will be working on the public space around the building, as we connect the new building to the water supply and sewerage system. We are also seizing the opportunity to add a new strip of green between the front of the building and the cycle path along De Boelelaan. Various diversions will be in force during this period, supervised by a traffic controller. The emergency services will always be able to access a ‘bypass’ that we created using concrete sheeting at the end of July 2023.

Monday 21/8 until Friday 1/9

We will start by digging up the ground along De Boelelaan. We will begin at the SC Buitenveldert sports field and gradually work towards the De Boelelaan/Gustav Mahlerlaan junction. The footpath and cycle path have been closed. At both the tram stop in De Boelelaan/VU and the De Boelelaan/Gustav Mahlerlaan crossing, pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted to the south side of De Boelelaan. Cars, public transport and emergency services will not be affected by the works.

Weekend works: Saturday 2/9 until Monday 4/9

During this weekend, we will be working on the connections for the wastewater and rainwater drainage, underneath the De Boelelaan carriageway. At both the tram stop in De Boelelaan/VU and the De Boelelaan/Gustav Mahlerlaan crossing, pedestrians and cyclists will again be diverted to the south side of De Boelelaan.

Vehicles travelling across De Boelelaan in a westerly direction will be diverted via Buitenveldertselaan, Van Nijenrodeweg and Van der Boechorststraat back to De Boelelaan. Traffic heading to the fuel station in Parnassusweg will then only need to travel a short section via Gustav Mahlerlaan. The diversion has been scheduled to coincide with the period when Parnassusweg will also be closed to traffic heading out of the city. As a result, there will only be limited disruption in De Boelelaan: because of the works referred to, most of this traffic heading for the A10 will already be travelling via Amstelveenseweg and Beethovenstraat. The carriageway will be reopened to traffic on Monday morning at 06.00.

Monday 4/9 until Friday 6/10

We will need a month to complete the cable and pipeline work and link a new water pipeline to the existing network supplying Gustav Mahlerlaan. We are also installing a data cable in the same section together with a water hydrant for the fire service. At both the tram stop in De Boelelaan/VU and the De Boelelaan/Gustav Mahlerlaan crossing, pedestrians and cyclists will again be diverted to the south side of De Boelelaan. On the north-west side of Gustav Mahlerlaan, there will be one day when pedestrians have to walk past the works and cyclists will also have a minor diversion. Cars, public transport and emergency services will not be affected.

Monday 9/10 until Friday 20/10

We are reusing the old paving to landscape the new street. In the space between VU Amsterdam research building and De Boelelaan, we are adding a new strip of green. When the work is complete, the builders working on the VU Amsterdam research building will install construction fencing 2 m from the building and along the footpath. At both the tram stop in De Boelelaan/VU and the De Boelelaan/Gustav Mahlerlaan crossing, pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted to the south side of De Boelelaan as previously. Motorised traffic will again be unaffected.
