Safer access to emergency department at Amsterdam UMC-VUmc location

The entrance/exit is part of the route leading to the emergency medical centre at Amsterdam UMC-VUmc location. In 2021, there was a fatal accident there. In response to it, there has been discussion with various experts, in coordination with local residents, in order to identify ways of improving traffic safety. This has resulted in a series of measures that we will be implementing in the weekend of Friday, 3 November 2023:

  • We will be widening the entrance/exit in order to give drivers entering from the carriageway in Amstelveenseweg more time and a better overview when crossing the cycle path and footpath.
  • We will be adding a slight bend in the road from the Amstelveen direction which will force drivers to reduce their speed.
  • We will add road markings to the cycle path along with signposts to draw cyclists’ attention to approaching traffic attempting to turn.

New situation: wider entrance, reduced speeds and new signposting

Schedule and disruption

The works will start at 20.00 on the evening of Friday, 3 November and are expected to be completed by 21.00 on the evening of Sunday, 5 November. In order to complete the work on time, it will continue throughout the night. While the work is in progress, Amstelveenseweg will be closed in the Amstelveen direction between De Boelelaan and Van Nijenrodeweg – motorised traffic will be diverted via Van der Boechorststraat. Although various measures will be in place to reduce noise, there will inevitably be some noise disruption.

After the accident, a memorial flowerbed next to the entrance/exit was set up in 2021. This area will be cordoned off to protect it from the works.
