Summer weekend closure of A10 Zuid in Schiphol direction

Any closure of the A10 Zuid causes quite a lot of disruption. We try to reduce this by scheduling closures like this at times when there is less traffic, such as in the summer when many people are on holiday. Of course, we are also not working in a bubble: the A10 Zuid is an important artery in Amsterdam’s overall road network, on which work is being done in various places in order to improve access to the city in the future. But the city also needs to remain accessible during road closures. This is why there is intensive coordination of the various works in advance. For example, the Amsterdam Bereikbaar video below (in Dutch, click on the image) features the widening of the A9 Badhoevedorp-Holendrecht and the repair work on Gooiseweg and Zuidasdok traffic manager Niels van den Brink talks about our own works and the disruption involved. What do we plan to do?

Weekend closure of A10 Zuid in Schiphol direction

In the second weekend of July, we will be closing the A10 Zuid in the Schiphol direction in order to make it possible to work safely on the major regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station. That weekend marks the start of six weeks of works in and around the station. This will include the use of a crane on the A10 Zuid. In order to be able to do that safely, we are closing the A10 Zuid in the direction of Schiphol for a whole weekend from the Amstel interchange all the way to the S108 Amsterdam Oud-Zuid access road. The S108 access road from the city (Amstelveenseweg) will remain open however. The closure will be from the evening of Friday, 12 July until the morning of Monday, 15 July.

One hour additional journey time via diversions

From the A10 Noord, the A10 will be closed from the Watergraafsmeer interchange in the direction of A10 Zuid and the A4 (see map). Traffic from this direction will be diverted via the A1 and A9. Traffic from the A2 can join the A9 at Holendrecht in the direction of the A4/A10 West, or alternatively use the A10 Oost. Traffic from the A1 has a choice of taking the A10 Noord in the direction of the A5 or the A9 in the direction of Amstelveen/Haarlem. The S111 access road will also be closed and traffic will be diverted locally. Although there will be less commuter traffic during this period, drivers should expect significant increases in journey times of up to one hour.

Metro track and viaduct move northwards

In this summer weekend, the Nieuw Zuid construction consortium (Boskalis, Mobilis and Van Gelder) will start to demolish the northern metro track and its platform. The glass dome above the staircases leading to the metro platform will be removed. Some distance away, above Parnassusweg, Nieuw Zuid will demolish the metro viaduct. It will then rebuild it again several metres closer to the A10 Zuid. This will kill two birds with one stone. Firstly, we are making it possible to extend the North/South metro line. This currently goes no further than the station, but is to be extended in the future to the west to reach the railyard next to Amstelveenseweg. We are also putting the track, platform and viaduct back in place several metres higher. By doing this, we are creating room for the roof of the new passenger tunnel, the Brittenpassage. This will also enable us to increase the height of the existing Minervapassage from 2.5 to 4.5 m.

Closures for work on De Nieuwe Meer interchange

Of course, we are not only working on the regeneration of Amsterdam Zuid station this year. The TriAX construction consortium (Besix, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans) is working on the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer interchange, which will also require several road closures. We will provide details of the exact dates and times in due course.

Following the weekend closure in July, the works on Amsterdam Zuid station in the weeks after that will also require several night-time closures of the A10 Zuid in the direction of Schiphol. Details of this will also be confirmed when we have more certainty about the exact dates and times.
