Fertile soil from Ravelgracht to be reused

In the new Ravel residential district, something extraordinary is happening. To the south of the AFC football pitches, we are digging a canal: Ravelgracht. The fertile soil that we are removing is set to be reused in other places in Amsterdam.

Laying of Maurice Ravellaan for new Ravel district

Starting in September 2023, we will spend a year working on the entrance to the new Ravel residential district: Maurice Ravellaan, with space for pedestrians, cyclists and plenty of green areas. We are also digging an actual canal, complete with bridges to the AFC sports fields.

More works in Beethovenstraat

From Friday, 2 September until Friday, 21 October 2022, there will be further traffic disruption and potentially also noise nuisance in Beethovenstraat, between Gustav Mahlerlaan and De Boelelaan. This is because of works in preparation for the new Ravel residential district.

Valley gradually grows greener

The first plants in Valley’s vertical valley were planted a year ago. So, how is all this greenery developing? We joined the landscape gardener to take a look. ‘It will still take about another four or five years before it’s all fully grown.’

Local school children design sustainable residential district

For their module in ‘sustainable local development’, pupils from Vossius Gymnasium have been working on ideas for the Ravel district. They talked to experts, carried out field research and presented their ideas to a jury – who were very impressed!

Maurice Ravellaan starts to take shape

Next to the southern entrance to Valley, the first piece of Maurice Ravellaan is now in place. This avenue will be the access route to the new Ravel residential neighbourhood. A crossroads has now appeared where Mahlerlaan previously formed a T-junction with Beethovenstraat.

From start to finish: Valley in images

Valley is now virtually complete. Developer EDGE and the Valley construction consortium have successfully built a multifunctional building that will give Zuidas a new look. Hundreds of construction workers have spent around three and a half years working on it. Below is a visual retrospective.

Digital techniques improve design for Valley

Valley, the iconic building that is nearing completion, is an architectural tour de force. Digital computer models have made a vital contribution to that. Arup subjected the design to tests that included such factors as daylight, hours of sun and privacy.

New link for Zuidas loop system

Anyone looking east beyond Gustav Mahlerlaan will see a trench, 10 m wide and 5 m deep, running alongside Valley. It is a new link in the planned loop system around Zuidas. ‘We’ll be creating some lasagne here.’

Valley project reaches new heights

The builders working on the Valley project are currently working on both the shell of the building and on the interior. ‘Under the current circumstances, it’s pretty remarkable that our team of 150 is still working as normal’, says site manager Ruud van der Thiel.
