On 11 September 2023, we began laying Maurice Ravellaan. The road starts at the junction with Beethovenstraat leading off Gustav Mahlerlaan and runs in an easterly direction to Antonio Vivaldistraat. This will make it the main access route to the AFC football club on the northern side and the planned Ravel residential district on the southern side – in the video below, you can see an aerial view of the area. The works are expected to cause only minimal (traffic) disruption and to be completed in September 2024.

Canal around AFC sports fields

In the period before the completion of Maurice Ravellaan in September of next year, we are also working on the surrounding public space: this will not only include new footpaths and cycle paths along Maurice Ravellaan, but also planting areas with space for greenery. There will be a canal around the AFC sports fields, to be known as Ravelgracht. As a result, the football club will only be accessible via bridge in the future. Digging the canal and building the bridge are part of the work being done.

Canal, bridge and western half of Ravellaan

Starting on 11 September, we will spend three weeks on the brickwork for the canal wall and landscaping the area on the western half of Maurice Ravellaan on the Valley side: we are digging the canal, adding areas of green and creating a footpath and a cycle path. From 6 January 2024, we will start work on the bridge leading to AFC. The abutment that will support the bridge has already been put in place. A telescopic crane will be used to lift the bridge deck into position and part of the AFC grounds will be fenced off for this purpose.

Eastern half of Ravellaan and carriageway

In April 2024, work will start on the eastern half of Maurice Ravellaan. Here, we will also be building a canal wall, digging the canal and adding the green areas, footpaths and cycle paths. The old access route leading to AFC in Antonio Vivaldistraat will be removed and replaced by the new entrance via Maurice Ravellaan, across the new bridge.

Finally, starting on 1 June 2024, we will need four months to build both the eastern or western side of the carriageway for Maurice Ravellaan. The work will be completed by the end of September 2024.

Access

From the start of the works on 11 September 2023 until the end of March 2024, AFC will remain accessible to cyclists, pedestrians and suppliers via the temporary access route in Antonio Vivaldistraat. From April 2024, people will be able to access AFC using a temporary footpath in Hector Berliozlaan and the new bridge to AFC. Suppliers and emergency services will make use of the construction road leading from Beethovenstraat. At the start of July 2024, the pavements and cycle paths in Maurice Ravellaan will be complete and people will then be able to access the football club via the main entrance from Antonio Vivaldistraat. Suppliers and emergency services will continue to use the construction road starting in Beethovenstraat until Maurice Ravellaan is completed at the end of September 2024.

Families welcome in Ravel
The leafy and low-traffic Ravel residential district is increasingly taking shape. After the completion of the Valley building, the work on the underground cables and pipelines and the relocation of the AFC football club, we will begin building more houses and amenities in 2024 – with a particular focus on families. The first of these is Kindercampus Zuidas. By 2025, Ravel will boast 1,350 homes, a school and a range of amenities.
