Plenty of space for housing in Zuidas

In a relatively short space of time, Zuidas has blossomed into an exceptionally dynamic area. Now Zuidas’s success as a business centre must be sustained, as Amsterdam prepares for one of the most massive infrastructure projects in its history – the Zuidasdok.

While all this is going on, a total of more than 7,000 homes will be constructed. In the upcoming period, our most important challenge will be to maintain and enhance the quality of people’s lives at home and at work, and in terms of their recreational activities. Maintaining the area’s accessibility is another major priority.

Thirty percent social housing

During discussions of the Zuidas Vision policy document, the city council insisted that the housing programme needed further fine-tuning. The Vision policy document states that at least 30 percent of these new homes should be in the social sector. In addition, at least 30 percent of the housing programme must consist of private sector rental properties, of which at least half must be accessible to people with middle incomes. The remaining 40 percent can be owner-occupied properties.

Planners have also been asked to translate their aspirations with regard to green areas, culture, and a vibrant atmosphere into tangible measures and to submit these to the council separately.
