Wielingenstraat closed to all vehicle traffic for two days

Waternet is taking advantage of the work being carried out in Wielingenstraat to modernize the sewers in that area. One of the pipes in Krammerstraat needs to be connected to the existing sewer on the other side of the road. The pipe will therefore curve around under the road and the temporary road surface will need to be dug up for this. Between 19.00 on Friday 4 November and 5.00 on Monday morning, the street will be closed to vehicle traffic in both directions. Cyclists and pedestrians can continue to use Wielingenstraat.

Detour via Churchilllaan

Vehicle traffic will be diverted via Churchilllaan during the work. The entrance to car park P9 of the RAI will not be accessible either. The work is being completed all in one go in order to limit disruption as much as possible. This does mean there is a chance of disturbance due to noise in the evening and at night, but of course we will try to minimize this.

Cyclists on the pavement

Since the start of the major maintenance work in Wielingenstraat, we have heard several stories about cyclists using the pavement, which is narrower than usual due to the work. This can be hazardous, both for pedestrians and for residents of Wielingenstraat, who need to use the pavement to access their homes. We have now installed bicycle gates and signs to encourage cyclists to dismount and push their bikes. Unfortunately, this does not seem to have solved the problem completely and we continue to depend on the consideration and cooperation of the cyclists themselves. Incidentally, extra bicycle parking areas have been created around the corner in Haringvlietstraat and Kramerstraat, to make up for the spaces lost in Wielingenstraat.

We have been working on a safer and greener Wielingenstraat since 19 September 2022. One of the two lanes will remain closed for about a year for this. For more information (in Dutch), please visit www.amsterdam.nl/wielingenstraat.
