Beethovenstraat cycle path next to WTC reopens

In the summer of 2018, we closed the cycle path running from the city (or Prinses Irenestraat) alongside the WTC to the south. This was done to enable the WTC to be expanded, which was expected to take around three years. It ended up being almost five: there were serious delays in construction, partly due to the bankruptcy of several subcontractors of Ballast Nedam and problems caused by the pandemic. Since this is a frequently-used route, we put a temporary cycle path in place running over the top of Strawinskylaan (the original cycle path went via the cycle tunnel underneath Strawinskylaan).

Bicycle tunnels

After years spent building Tower Ten, we began re-landscaping the area around it last year. This also meant we had to close the temporary cycle path running over the top. The other remaining bicycle tunnels underneath Strawinskylaan and Beethovenstraat also had to close for around six months. As a result, cyclists travelling from north to south and vice-versa had to cross Beethovenstraat twice – a far from ideal situation that led to many questions. We are now finally able to report that this situation is behind us and the cycle path underneath Strawinskylaan and alongside the WTC has been reopened.

Re-landscaping of public space almost completed

Part of WTC Tower Ten has already been completed. In the upcoming period, we will be completing the work in the public space around it. This includes adding an attractive footpath between Strawinskylaan and Beethovenstraat. We are also building a stairway from Strawinskylaan in the direction of the entrance to Tower Ten. We are currently in the process of planting up the area between the motorway and the cycle path along the front of the WTC. The work is scheduled to be completed in May.
