Parnassusweg station entrance already back in use

The works in Parnassusweg, right in front of the entrance to the railway platforms at Amsterdam Zuid station, ran smoothly. Remarkably, there were no setbacks whatsoever. This enabled us to reopen the station entrance as early as 07.00 on Monday, 21 August 2023 – two weeks sooner than expected. The cycle path on the eastern side of Parnassusweg is also open again (in the direction of the city). We have moved it very slightly in order to enable construction of CubeHouse. The fifteen bicycle racks, with space for 480 bikes, are also back in place.

Successful works

We even worked through several weekends in order to complete the work during the relatively quiet holiday and thereby minimise disruption. This involved quite a lot of work. On the relatively short section between the north and south side of the viaduct, we removed 43 ducts containing a total of 7,740 m of telecom cables from the ground. These were no longer necessary, because we had already laid new sections as part of the Zuidas Energy and Utilities Master Plan (Masterplan Energie en Nutsvoorzieningen Zuidas) (MENZ for short). As well as these colourful cables, we also removed a drinking water pipe that was 1 m in diameter, made modifications to the sewer and Liander removed several medium- and low-voltage cables.

Making space for A10 Zuid motorway tunnels

Thanks to the removal of the old cables and pipelines, we have more room for the future, more serious work: in five years or so, in around 2028, Zuidasdok will start construction work here on a tunnel that will take the A10 underground. Near the centre of Zuidas, the motorway will be diverted underground for around a kilometre. This will create more than 100,000 m² of public space above ground. This is not only enough space for a larger station, with a bus and tram station next to the entrance, but also more green space for cyclists and pedestrians. The tender procedure for this huge project was launched just a short time ago. The southern tunnel is scheduled for completion by 2034, the northern tunnel by 2035. These tunnels will run parallel to the railway and metro tracks.
